Are Laptops coming with 64-bit Vista?

    Hi guys

I've been searching for sometime for a number of laptops with 64 bit Vista not 32bit and have only come across Zepto.com with the choice of Vista 64bit?
Do you think others such Dell, Sony, Samsung, Asus etc will adopt Vista 64 with Centrino 2 and Puma coming out?

    Thanks for any thoughts!

Re: Are Laptops coming with 64-bit Vista?

I suppose they may but they are far more likely to air on the side of caution when it comes to an OS. They want as little trouble as possible and that, for the moment, is still the 32bit jobbies.

Lower volume companies like Zepto can get away with it but I think it may be a while before dell and the like jump on that band wagon.

The licenses for vista cover either 32bit or 64bit as long as its the same version (home premium for example). So if it comes with 32bit installed, if you can get hold of a 64bit installation disc you could just install it with your product key.

    Correct.

I believe Ultimate comes with both 32bit and 64bit discs in the box(?), but you can only send for the "alternative" DVD, if you buy a retail version of HP.
If you opt for an OEM version, you have to decide which one you want/order one or the other

Re: Are Laptops coming with 64-bit Vista?

Also, what's the point. Until laptops start shipping with 4GB ram there's really no point running a 64-bit OS on a laptop.

What annoys me more is you buy a laptop for work and find it comes with a "Home" variant and can't join a domain. I mean, come on this is 2008 - even Linux can join a Windows domain yet MS still produces products that are incompatible with their own software. Windows Server (and domains) are everywhere, and people use laptops in places of work so to me it's ridiculous to see so many shipping with a variant of Vista Home.
