Multiplier versus Frequency

I just upgraded to a 5600+ Brisbane (2.9GHz) yesterday, and I made a very modest OC from 2.9GHz to 3GHz. The idea is, that if I'm "in the office", I keep the multiplier to 9x216(1.944GHz) from 14x216(3.024GHz) - The theory being that 2GHz is enough for most things.

Is there a proper way to do this? Is the lowering of the multiplier any better or worse than any other method - like keeping the multi' to 14 and lowering the frequency to achieve the same speed. I'm trying to consider the use of less wattage if that's possible.

I don't understand your question 100%, I think you mean something like this (intel example)

9*266= 2660Mhz FSB = 1064(nearly 1066)
8*333= 2664Mhz FSB = 1332(nearly 1333)

So similar speeds but due to the Higher FSB(333) and the 8x Multi allows the system more bandwidth inwhich allows for a faster system. Even though the clock speeds are nearly the same.

So i think on AMD systems it has something to do with HT i suppose the higher the bus speed the better also.

no you want to keep your bus frequency as high as possible. I would lower the multi until i can achived the targeted speed with the high bus frequency possible.

There is an easier way to do it, does the exact same thing but automatically. Its called AMD cool and quiet and should be an option in the BIOS to turn it on and off. What it does is under clock your CPU when you are not stressing the system and when you do need the power it clocks the CPU back up to its original or overclocked frequency.

You could try mess around with RMClock, very good tool for optimizing power usage.

That's cool... was something I wasn't aware of at first when I had an AMD and I wanted the same thing :D

if you have vista, you can just turn on the power saver power settings. It limits CPU load to 50% to minimise power consumtion among other optimisations

I bumbled my way into that today after talking with Albrerto Milani at "SpeedFan" (almico{dot}com) in fact, I can't remember which came first: Too many parameters, too little time. It'll take me weeks to get through all this-------------------> :juggle:

Have left the CPU running a 3GHz and added the Akasa Fan Control Pro. Will do for now.
