    SATA just will not cut it for high access database servers or large user terminal service servers.
    Which reinforces my point about application requirements. Even still, the 2nd generation raptors in my home server are able to handle a ridiculous amount of transactions with MySQL.

    Not for my home computer anyway.

    By high access I mean hunderds of users. Even 30 users on a TS server would start to hurt a SATA interface

    When it comes to RDBMS, user count isn't relevant since all users share the same process, but certainly a sub-optimally developed terminal server will bog it down with a relatively trivial load. It all depends on usage.

    It's horses for courses, though. You often have to look at performance on the one hand and reliability and durability on the other. And if you want both, you price yourself out of the market that I'd guess either current or these new Raptors are aimed at.

    its more to do with the writes than the reads though.

    yes, but these Raptors will be aimed at the home user not business I would think. SAS at home would be stupid.

    WD are aiming at business use as well as enthusiasts. Clearly no run-of-the-mill home user would pay £200 for 300GB when they can get several terabytes for the same money.

    Re: Western Digital working on 20,000rpm Raptor

    i use SAS and SCSI before due to the sofware i use ( for work and working from home) does a lot of read/writes simultaniously
    for me thats the advavmtage other wise id look at the raptor
    Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.

    15krpm drives have been around for many years. There's likely a good reason nobody's bothered making a 20krpm drive.
    PHP Code:
    $s = new signature();
    $s->sarcasm()->intellect()->font('Courier New')->display();

    Insufficient bearing and heat energy management technologies could be two that come to mind.

    Agreed. I vaguely remember talks of 18k RPM drives many years ago. Does that ring a bell to anyone? Assuming it was real, it's pretty clear that it didn't take off.

    I am not sure how far further they can take the Raptor though. Twice the RPM will not bring twice the performance, and while I do not think that SSD has brought the end of the Raptor series yet (due to the price/capacity), the situation may be very difference in 3 years time. 7200RPM drives will manage as long as capacity increases. Businesses may not embrace SSDs straight away until they are more proven. But if price narrows, I do can see people currently willing to buy a Raptor switch to SSD.

    If that happens, it'll be a lot of R&D money out the window.

    I'd guess these Raptors will be aimed at the home enthusiast market where users will pay a significant premium for performance, perhaps often without a real need for it, and for certain classes of business use. But they won't be aimed at SAS for replacing heavy-duty enterprise servers. But in either home use or business, they'll be a pretty niche product.

    20,000rpm ?! how loud would that be!

    Re: Western Digital working on 20,000rpm Raptor

    The VelociRaptor is not louder than most 7200RPM drives even though it spins at 10,000RPM. I am sure there is a positive correlation between motor speed and noise, I am pretty sure they can reduce that significantly with some masterful engineering.

    Re: Western Digital working on 20,000rpm Raptor

    Indeed, larger spindle columns need bigger/more bearings which increase noise as rotational rate speeds up, since everything in the velociraptor is smaller, the heat and noise is reduced despite being faster, due to less physical friction.

    Re: Western Digital working on 20,000rpm Raptor

    I don't really see this going anywhere...

    SSD Drives are dropping in price all the time so it won't be long before they reach a normal level for desktops...

    You can get 32GB Memory Sticks for £100 now...

    In 10 years I reckon HDD's will be living in servers and not very many other places...

    Until SSD HDDs reach the technological, and financial level of Magnetic HDDs, I don't see them taking off in a big way aside from ultra-portable laptops. And at the rate magnetic HDDs are progressing I don't see that happening for many many years.
