Funky Hardware Problem! PSU related - i think

Well, came in last night to my little brother "PC turned itself off", me instantly thinking another BSOD or him mucking around with windows somehow. No, it actually wont turn back on!

System is 18 months odd old and is all over <<<.

Well, after quickly trying the power button to no avail. Round the back I noticed the little light on the power supply with the switch is still lit up!

I unplugged everything (noticed a slight burnt smell round back at fans) and pulled the case out, got that side panel off and had a look. Nothing out of the ordinary bar more dust than I have ever seen. No burnt smell at all in here. Must have been my nose playing up.

Well, i plugged in just the power cable and turned the switch on the PSU to on, and without even pressing the power button everything came on, but, lights on MotherBoard and Neons on Fans were flickering like hell, 15 -25 seconds later turned itself off. Waiting a couple of minutes and flicking the switch back and forward on PSU and it would do this again.

Began unplugging everything from the PSU, Optical Drive, Sata HDD, IDE HDD, Floppy and 1 Fan all out from motherboard and power supply. Flicked it back to on on the PSU, sprang to life - No Flickering!. Motherboard beeped at me the usual because no monitor. So hooked it up and everythings perfect, booted into windows a usb keyboard later.

Next obviously hook things up one by one. 10 minutes later everything is hooked back up just as it was and everythings working. Writing this from it rite now as it sits case open on its side on the ground!

Any ideas? Could it have been an overheating issue? Going to give it a good clean out as theres so much dust in there!

    Thanks

Needs new monitor / speakers / headphones / keyboard.

Sounds like the PSU to me. Have you got another to use for a week or two to see if the problem still occurs?

Also what are your system specs.

Specs are in "My System" over to the left under my name etc.

Sorry if you couldnt see them before, for some reason they had been removed and I just readded them a couple minutes ago.

Dont have another PSU to use, PC has been running for an hour or so now without any problems.

Im going to be posting another thread for a 400-500 quid build for myself later today so whenever I purchase the stuff for that could use that PSU to test if this PC goes funky again!

Re: Funky Hardware Problem! PSU related - i think

I do think its the PSU, i had one that would not switch on every 5th 6th time that i went to boot my pc, to get it working again i just used to have to unplug the power supply and it would work again. Changed the PSU and never had another problem after that.

Like you say you can test it when you buy new parts in a few weeks.

Re: Funky Hardware Problem! PSU related - i think

Thats classic 'Hiper' at its best.
This sounds like its almost certainly a PSU error.

    BUT

    There is good news.
Even though Hipers can be flaky, their RMA service is excellent and its based in the UK.
    Contact them: HIPER RMA SYSTEM

As its only 18 months old, the PSU is still well within warranty.

    Good Luck

Yes that describes exactly what happened to my Hiper, and is why you will find this board screams "NOOOOO!!!!" when anyone wants to buy one.

I didn't bother to RMA mine. I decided that I'd buy a decent PSU instead.
