    New System

Since my old set-up is starting to show its age I've decided to upgrade, and here is what I'm looking at so far:

    Intel Core Duo E6750
    Asus P5K Premium Wi-Fi
    G.Skill 4Gb PQ DDRII PC8000
    Scythe Mine Rev B
    Samsung Spinpoint 500GB
    550W Xclio Greatpower Modular
    GeForce 8800GTX
    Antec P182

A few things first. I already have the CPU (I actually got it a couple of months back, but lack of free money has meant it has gone unused), so that can't really be changed, and I have a decent DVD burner so there's no need to replace that. Also I've read that the P182 can sometimes have problems with modular PSU's due to the location of the bottom fan, so does anyone know if the Xclio will be a problem? It's no big deal if so, I'll just get a non-modular one, it'd just be nice to know before I order it so I don't have to wait while I return it for something more suitable. Finally would it be worth the extra £30-£40 to get PC8500 RAM over what I currently have listed? the G.Skill is going for a great price where I've seen it, but I'd be willing to wait a week or two for another pay check if there is a notable increase in performance.

    Re: New System

All looks good to me. I would probably drop the memory back to PC6400 unless you are planning on serious overclocking. That is a 1333MHz chip if memory serves so for a big overclock the PC8000 or even 8500 would be useful

Power Supply, no idea about that one but the corsair 520W HX (which I would buy in preference to the xclio) is in my P182 and the cabels reach a treat

    Re: New System

As mike said it looks good. Even if you don't want the new GFX cards that are coming out waiting for them to come out so that older generation go on sale would be worth while.

Other than a possible better deal on a GFX everything looks really good

Starting to show it's age?! Looks like a top dog system (without spending serious ££&#163 to me. Perhaps get another GFX card in there in a few weeks with the new releases?

    Re: New System

I just noticed you got the E6750 there... this is the newer 45nm Intel CPU with more cache E8300> Computer hardware and software at amazing prices, available online from Scan Computers UK

Its cheaper(OEM but you are getting a heatsink anyway) and will be faster than the E6750. Also the Wolfdale cores overclock far better.

    Re: New System

The Corsair looks good, cheers for pointing that out Mike. As for the RAM, I do plan on tinkering with it down the line, that's why I'm looking at the higher speeds. I've been reading a few reviews online and the G.Skill sticks look promising and seem to overclock well so I'll probably stick with them.

@ExHail: Alas I already have the chip, I got it ages ago. I do know that it is a good overclocker, and can run pretty fast with just air cooling so it's not a loss.

If you already have the chip then its fine its just that if your purchasing the other one is cheaper and better

I have the E6550 and its a great overclocker, would love to have a better multiplier in order to go higher because I know it can go further its just my memory holding me back at the moment.

    Re: New System

Wait a couple of weeks on the graphics card, an ATI 4870 will probably be cheaper/faster than the 9800GTX, but you'll have to wait a week until we find out

Were you drunk when you wrote this? That was his proposed NEW system, not his existing.

Mr Eff, I'd echo the calls to get the Corsair HX520, a superb PSU. Even if you need the WiFi, the Asus may not be the best board - I can recommend the Abit IP35 Pro, frequently seen on Scan's Today Only, and a separate WiFi card (same make as the Router IMO). With that CPU, PC6400 is going to be enough.

    Re: New System

Since I can afford it I would prefer to buy a motherboard and RAM that can match my processor, otherwise I feel that I'm wasting it, though I do see your point.

Well get PC8500 in that case. The ASUS board has had a fair few problems with SATA though and the Abit supports exactly the same chips/memory. If you want something past this you need an X38/X48/P45 chipset board.
