GTX 280 Power Consumption
With the new cards just around the corner does anyone have an idea if the Corsair HX620 would supply enough power to it with:
3 HDDS (7200RPM)
OC'd Q6600 (about 3.2GHz)
Abit IP-35 Pro
6 120mm Fans
2 DVD Drives
Soundcard
4GB DDR2 800MHz RAM
Dont want to buy it all and find it doesnt even boot :angst:
Re: GTX 280 Power Consumption
I don't see why not. I saw somewhere that it wants about 250W, not sure if thats right or wrong but that said it's going to be one expensive card! I'd be looking at the ATi myself.
Re: GTX 280 Power Consumption
I too have seen claims that it needs 230w.
This is also interesting http://www.theinquirer.net/gb/inquir...cores-revealed

With the rediculous "increase" of performance we got from the 9800GTX I at least thought this one would be a decent step in the right direction.
I will bide my time though lol
Re: GTX 280 Power Consumption
The most annoying this is they seem to have pulled the 8800GTS which still in my mind made a lot of sense at it's ever falling price, circa £140.
Whoops meant to edit lol
Re: GTX 280 Power Consumption
Even if the GTX 280 takes 250W that power supply will still be fine :) During many reviews you will notice that systems take in the region of 200W with a modest graphics card, factoring in 80% power efficiency, you should still be fine...

Don't get me wrong, if I'm a fanboy (and I don't think of myself as one) then I'm an ATI one, but there's an awfully negative spin on that, whereas the results aren't all that bad from what I can see.
I've not even mentioned the professionalism yet. I mean come on - it's OK to dislike something, but "The drivers are a bit old, but not that old, and the CPU is an Intel QX9650 @ 3.0GHz on the broken OS, 32-bit, SP1"... that's dire even by Inq standards.
From a raw performance point of view the GTX260 and GTX280 will be the fastest single-GPU cards available, and only the dual-GPU HD4850X2 and/or HD4870X2 will likely challenge them. That doesn't necessarily make it a good product, by any means, but at the high end, all that matters to most is performance. I do lots of things other than play the latest games, so I'm more than happy to get the HD4850 or HD4870 if they're worth the upgrade from the HD3870 (or perhaps even HD4870X2 if it's as impressive as the HD3870X2 was), but if the shrunk GTX260 is a success at a decent price, I'd consider it. NV are catching up to ATI where it matters, but it's taken enough time.

Yeah the 512Mb 8800GTS(G92) was the best nVidia card out imo. It was as fast if not faster in some cases than the 8/9800GTX and for close to half the price and falling. It was a seriously good buy if anyone could get one but it seems they got rid of them because the more expensive cards were losing out to them :(
I have this overwhelming hope that the ATI card beats nVidia hands down. Early reports so far have all shown the ATI card to be better but none of them can be confirmed or verified and are all just rumours as far as we know. The price difference(if correct) will be in ATI's favour and will cripple nVidia for sure. It will be a one 2 punch from Intel and AMD if they manage to wrestle the performance crown from nVidia because that is all nVidia are holding onto at the moment with everything else seemingly falling by the wayside.
Re: GTX 280 Power Consumption
No ATI card until August will beat the GTX200s in terms of gaming performance. They'll be zillions of times better it the value for money stakes, naturally, and you'll carry on saving money until the day you remove the card from your comp, but they'll not beat the NV cards until the X2s come out, and even then it's a bit hit and miss as some still don't like multi-GPU setups (though I think it's fair to say the HD3870X2 went a long way to rectifying a lot of the problems).
