For raw performance the "Nvidia" 8800GTX is the better card out the two.

    Re: ati vs nvidea

Both companies equally suck and driver development. That's a non-issue.

In terms of priceerformance the 3870 is the better buy, in terms of raw performance, the 8800GTX.

Neither, wait for the new gen ati or nvidia cards to come and see how they perform. They should be out within the next two weeks.

The 8800GTX will eat that ATI card alive then spit out the fan.

    8800GTX - £180 ish
    8800GTS 512mb - £140-£190
    8800GT - £100-£150

All superior to that ATI card.

    Re: ati vs nvidea

All faster than the ATI card. Superior... matter of opinion. The 8800GTX shouldn't be considered in the same breath as the others - it costs more and you'll make up double the extra you'd have spend within 2 months, and over and over again for however long you keep the card. 8800GTS and 8800GT are more viable, but not a wise choice (at the moment) with the HD48x0s around the corner, and the 9800GT potentially lowering prices (though rumours remain of NV just allowing rebadging of the 8800GTs to be 9800GTs - should still have a slight knock-on on 8800GT prices).

Wait until the HD4850 is released a week on Monday. It's looking quite tasty from a value for money point of view.

HD3850 if you need something now. A good bit cheaper than the rest and not all that much slower (unless you play Crysis, in which case nothing is worth it).

    Re: ati vs nvidea

If money is no concern and and performance all that matters, than the 8800GTX is the better choice of the two. But even if money is no concern, the 8800GTX does not have a straight win against the 8800GTS and is often cheap. The 3870 does have some features which may be interest for HTPC users though. But as others have said, I'd wait for the new card to see what they bring to the table. I am actually not that sure that the new cards will bring even lower prices, graphics card tend to 'bottom up' less in price, and you may in fact end up finding old cards becoming more expensive once production is stopped (e.g. An example, hardly unique, is the cost of the 640MB GTS after the release of the Rev. 2 version).
