Go for the single platters that SIM has just bought. I would have the western digital AAKS if you can find them (scan aren't as yet) but the samsungs will be great too
The single platter WDs aren't available yet afaik. You will need to wait until the ones with a specific model number come into stock...
You want WD3200AAKS-00B3A0... I couldn't wait (I'm too impatient), so I got the F1s which are about the same in performance (but WD has reputation as more reliable)...
Thanks guys, I've seen the WD 320GB ones at ebuyer but not sure if they are 00B3A0 single platter models, may give ebuyer a ring/email and see if they can check for me

I'm not the most knowledgeable about hard drives so would like to find something out if you guys could answer that would be great.
Not long ago everyone I knew regarded Seagate as the best of the best hard drives and I mean everyone I knew including numerous computer studies teachers, tech geeks working for computer companies and friends of friends which just continued until the total count of people recommending Seagate over any other was well above 100 people. Without coming across any one that said otherwise I was under the distinct impression Seagate were the market leaders not only in performance but service as well. None of my associates(some of them I would rather not contact again if you know what I mean) ever mentioned anything untoward about service either so I am just wondering if things have changed or have I just come out of a place where there is a distinct prejudice towards any company other than Seagate?
I only ask because not once have I seen Seagate recommended by hexites and I still think they are a very good brand of hard drives. Got the 500Gb Barracuda 7200.11 and its whisper quite and very good. Is there something Seagate has done that makes there products less satisfactory or have the competition just gotten better and Seagate has yet to catch up?
i'd say the competition has just got better. i use seagate drives in my NAS box and they've been rock steady since i got them. I have samsung, western digital and maxtor drives too, and none of them seem to have any problems. i'd go for whatevers the cheapest tbh
OP, why do you want to run RAID0 anyway? if you lose one drive, you lost the lot!
I think there was a phase when WD offered 3 year warranty against 1 from maxtor and seagate. Since the drives were also good everyone jumped onto that and never looked back. Thats my theory.
Talking of samsungs - I had a 3.2gb samsung drive for about 8 years (gave it away a few years back i think, may still be in use now). Seemed to have been fine. In fact the only hdd that died on me was a quantum which I've always known to be rated very highly. Although I do have a 40gb seagate which I use with a usb kit that's been annoying me with it's beeping and seemingly needing to worm up before it agrees to play ball and be recognised.
Tough on mirrors, tough on the causes of mirrors.
Thanks guys.
And in reply to SteveB its for my gaming rig, just want the extra speed and e-peen (much like SiM ) and yeah I realise if one goes it all goes down but there won't be any important work on them

They should help themselves first tbh :S
