    Good download rate, poor ping?

We're having problems with our connection being really slow at the moment (virgin, 10mb connection). Speedtest show it running at 4.6mbs (bearable, as we are only here for another week before we move) but web sites still take 20-30seconds to load, and games are unplayable because we get kicked for having a ping of mid 900s.

Virgin tech help (india ) are worse then useless, so i was wondering if any of you could shed any light? Why do we get speedtest recordings of 2-6mb repeatedly on different sites, but still have problems playing games & with web sites loading?

Just a shot in the dark, but any ideas?

edit: Its a modem connecting straight to the PC there is no router at all. Its worked fine for the last 8 months, just start happening a week ago. I cant think of any software that could cause it but the PC is running vista 64, with AVG & windows firewall. Using both firefox & IE to test.

Run a trace route to find what stage the latency is at (inside your network, inside the ISP's network, or somewhere else).

You can find info on trace route here but if you don't want to read that just type this onto the command line and watch the pings:
    Code:
    tracert www.google.co.uk

Re: Good download rate, poor ping?

it all depends on what server you're playing on. pass the ip of the game server and we can see why you have such a problem. from those pings if I were assuming I'd say its a chinese server

My friend 999's in cod4 (also on virgin) when an upload is started.

Try and make sure no ones hogging your net before you play. If you don't share your net then make sure no apps are using the internet/uploading.

Re: Good download rate, poor ping?

With the server, its all of them. I play team fortress 2 and when i do a search for servers it takes 30seconds but then the list appears and all the servers have pings of 1000+. I join one and i get kicked within minutes due to my ping/ or the game is unplayable due to the lag.

    -10mins later-

I closed utorrent, MSN & xfire (only other apps using the internet) and the internet has gone back to normal (9.6mb). Not sure if it is a coincidence or not, but ill leave it for a couple of hours and see what happens! If it goes back to the way it was before, ill run a tracert and see if i can figure anything out from that/post it on here!

either way thanks for the help guys!

Its probably uTorrent causing the issues, especially if you were uploading anything. If you want to game online, never ever have this on at the same time.

Re: Good download rate, poor ping?

Iv turned utorrent back on and everything seems to be chugging along nicely so not sure its that (it was only downloading at 50kb/s & uploading at 45 kb/s anyway). Windows update i checked & it wasnt that.

Probably XFire then, but it shouldn't update when you're gaming!

Re: Good download rate, poor ping?

i can tell you that it's the utorrent fault 100% although it looks like using only a bit of traffic it actually hogs more than half of it + with the upload of 45 that's quite obvious

Re: Good download rate, poor ping?

Yep, you were right! The minute utorrent gets a grip on the connection it strangles it. Shutting utorrent off sorts the problem pritty much straight away!

    thanks all the same guys!
