    Gtx280+260

Basicaly sinse they released now, i think time to discuss.

\Personaly the gtx280 at 470 pounds retial(totaly inflated, compared to dollar...) is a total rip roaring rip off.

Like comon nvdia they havnt even released the 260 which is perfectly ready for release, just so gtx280 will be hyped to the max....low..very low..

Anyhow, i know people waiting for ATI ddr3 cards but we dont know much about them, though we hear compared to gtx280 they are only SLIGHTLY weaker and MUCH less exspencive.

Personaly i will most likely get a 260 (unless ATI cards blow it out of water ) sinse it much better from looks than the GTX9800 and will support high res perfectly fine while being much cheaper.

also whos going to be having a 24"+TFT with 2200x1600+res....not many.1600x1200 fine for me and the 260 will be fine for this sort of high res, no need for super high overkill.

SO WHAT CARDS YOU THINKING OF......

280= STINGER MISSILE LAUNCHER TO A DUCK SHOOTING CONTEST....

    Re: Gtx280+260

Plenty of other threads on this at the moment

The 260 looks a bit of a rip to me anyway. 24" monitors are 1920 x 1200 which is becoming somewhat of a standard gamers look for when it comes to grpahics cards. The ATi's should do quite nicely at this res.

ATI has DDR5 not DDR3 I think. And the GTX260 is not faster than the 3870X2 according to Anandtech, but costs rather more.

Bit early for a poll. Quite a few enthusiasts will be doing as I am and waiting a small time to see what the ATI cards are like, what they do to nVidia prices and hoping that the refreshed GTX280 will be with us sooner-rather-then-later (seems its in dire need of a die-shrink).

Still way way way too little known about what's happening.

    Re: Gtx280+260

Complete let down from where I am sitting for everyone concerned, unless money is no object.

Even the power consumption seems way too high for me, they should be trying to make these cards as efficient as possible not just across the mid range.

Maybe they will look more hopeful after a price drop, but I am one of those that wouldn't pay more than £200 for a graphics card. When you are paying £150 and over you expect it to really perform.

Real gaming examples show that there is little reason to have one of these over an 8800gt or similar card for now (not taking price drops into consideration), that is unless you insist on turning every graphical setting known to man to 16+ and very high.

    Re: Gtx280+260

^^ true, but i think atm the best card is the GTX9800 sinse it fairly cheap and runs very well.
also with the new cards the GTX9800 will go down even more in price. this would be my card, but first il wait and see about 260

I'm thinking I might buy a 8800 GXT for £100 and just wait it out and see which new card is the best.

    Re: Gtx280+260

I think ATI could regain the upper hand again.

If the cards are worse/about the same as these new Nvidia's then I don't know what will happen, large price drops I suppose.

The HD4870 will be using GDDR5 and the HD4850 will still have GDDR3

Anandtech are pretty reliable so I'd be hoping for a good result with ATI as it seems nVidia have slipped up with these cards and there crazy prices.

My vote is to wait to see what ATI have to offer and would more than likely be getting on of them

    Re: Gtx280+260

Just something you guys may find very interesting:

found a few points interesting:Save ppl reading it all

    Quote:
In fact, the GeForce GTX 260 even allowed a higher gameplay experience than the GeForce 9800 GX2 in Crysis. We were able to increase AF to 16X with the GeForce GTX 260 and still experienced higher framerates compared to the GeForce 9800 GX2.

    Quote:
Both the GeForce GTX 260 and 280 are a large improvement over the GeForce 9800 GTX. A GeForce 9800 GTX is playable at 1600x1200 with most of the options at “Medium” in Crysis. The BFGTech GeForce GTX 280 OC allows us to not only raise the resolution to 1920x1200 but also enable almost everything to “High.”

This part funny, makes me wonder how on earth did they make the game in first place

    Quote:
If we can sum up our experiences in Crysis, we can say that the GeForce GTX 280 is not the “Crysis killer,” in fact Crysis is the one doing the killing

Another interesting point, the gtx260 RULES the overclocking waves it would seem...seems it the new GTS512mb

    Quote:
The GeForce GTX 260 on the other hand overclocked quite nicely. We managed to achieve a 94 MHz overclock on the core taking it from 576MHz to 670MHz. We also received a nice boost for the stream processors from 1242MHz to 1450MHz; a 208MHz increase. The memory unfortunately disappointed us on this video card compared to the GTX 280, we were able to achieve 2.4GHz over 2GHz. This yielded a memory bandwidth improvement from 111GB/sec to 134GB/sec.

    and it seems..
    Quote:
The GeForce GTX 260, for a less expensive price, offers spectacular performance when you compare it to the last generation.

Finaly and most important i think ..
    Quote:
Well that is the question isn’t it? We think the GeForce GTX 260 will be a popular video card; it is priced more affordably at $399 and seems to allow the same if not better gameplay experience than GeForce 9800 GTX SLI for cheaper. It also seems to us that this video card is going to be great for overclocking enthusiasts, with large performance gains and some crazy modding and overclocking to come out of it. Availability of the GeForce GTX 260 will be on June 26th.

    Re: Gtx280+260

I am waiting to see what ATI have to offer, since i have been itching to get a new computer for a while i was prepared to jump straight onto the GTX 280 and get it at launch but the price : performance ratio is just too horrible for it to be straight off, so hopefully the ATI stuff will give a better idea of whether the cash is worth it, for either offering.

If the HD4870 can provide a substantial enough performance boost for the low cost it supposedly is offering then this is what i will get and price permitting maybe have two in crossfire, or dual HD4850's. Basically price for performance but still with the ability to produce GTX 280 power (or better) one way or another if it is desired immediately or in the future.

However most people seem to be glossing over the fact that the new GTX 280 is actually a pretty darn awsome card, if you compare it to the highest single GPU it is a rather large leap in terms of performance and is IMO the expected 'jump' everyone wanted. Because the GX2 is just under or about the same strength as the GTX 280 means people forget this, ofcourse 2 of something will be able to match up to one of something just up in the rankings. This is not and excuse for anything of the GTX 280 but I am meerly trying to point out that it is quite a significant leap forward but is only brought down because two older things have effectively been lumped together, if the GX2 wasn't around then it would be two 9800GTX in SLI that it would match and then I'm sure people would be going 'wow'.

However this obviously doesn't cover the fact of the horrible price being payed for the thing, it must be cheaper to be even properly considered as virtually every review so far has shown the GX2 is on average the same or just slightly worse but for a much cheaper price.

Basically my point is that while it is definately not near as good value for money as virtually anything else it is a leap forward in technology, but this leap forward has been disguised because of literally putting SLI into a single slot on the motherboard (which to be honest isn't a leap forward in the sense of power etc. just technical abilities, and most people are applauding or urging for techincal abilities of power). The GX2 only really came out because of the HD3870X2 not because it is a leap forward that people had been looking for (as everyone knows from the 9 series). Just stop bashing the GTX 280 for being the same power as a GX2 because the technological leap is there, just the idea of a jump in price is something nVidia seem to have got a little confused.

    Re: Gtx280+260

If the 280 has not tamed Crysis on max, and the 8800gt (or two 8800gts) can play most games maxed out (not always taking AA and AF into account which are often un-needed) what is the bloody point of paying £400 at the moment for performance you might not even see or notice unless you turn the FPS counter on?

Maybe it will leap ahead more in real life situations with the release of new games of course, but it hasn't bought any real new technologies to the table.

Can someone explain to me why you would fork out £400-450 for this card when there is nothing to take advantage of it?

At least it will cause nice price drops...
