WD HDD problem..

I bought a 180GB Western Digital Caviar SE 8MB EIDE on a forum a couple of weeks ago for £80 - to use as a master slave in my system until i upgrade then it will be my main hard drive

The drive seems to operate fine and have backed up some stuff on it - however it is noisy when its idle - it makes a sort of high pitched noise - and it gets annoying so i have taken it out.

Now my problem is what to do with it:
1) Try and return it to Western Digital (drive is about 10 months old) - but will they need to see receipt and stuff? - i was wondering about the returns policy because it says wont accept a drive it was bought second hand?

2) Try and sell on to someone else

3) other suggestions...

also if i do get another drive was thinking about a 160GB Western Digital serial for my new system (£79 new) - any one think this it is worth switching to serial.

Go for multiple smaller drives. The really large ones like 160GB+ seem to be full unreliable and don't last too long (unless you're lucky). Dunno about effect of noise level though. My WD 40GB is virtually silent.

just wondering if anyone else had the same problem with this drive ?

i think i might switch to a serial drive for now then get another one in the future - so that it will work in a raid configuration - so is western digital still the best for large serial drives? - i know the raptors are good - but they are small! - i need at lot more space than that looking at about 120-160GB

Raptors seem to be the best at the moment. But if you can't afford to get two of the 72GB models (about £200 each I think..... :eek: ), then Samsung are very good and quiet. Make sure to get the Spinpoint P series though.

:edit: Did you mean primary slave earlier, not master slave?

My IBM drives have alittle program available that lets you lower the noise level at the expense of seek times.....do western digital offer such a thing?

also must say i didnt know there were 180gb drives...?
