Moving Raid 0 Array to different Controller...

Hi guys, i'm hoping that someone out there has tried this and knows whether it can be done....

I'm typing this on an Abit kt7-raid (I know!) with a couple of ibm 60's striped on the highpoint hpt370 controller...

in the post today came my new rig; a DFI infinity nforce 2 / 2500 / 1gb twinmoss

I bought a 2nd hand "RocketRaid 100" P-ata raid pci card to tide me over till i get some sata drives.

Now heres the question... since my mobo uses the highpoint hpt370 chip, and the card uses the highpoint hpt370a chipset (almost exact!)

CAN I JUST PLONK MY OLD DRIVES STRAIGHT ONTO THE PCI CARD AND EXPECT IT TO RECOGNISE AN EXISTING ARRAY?

or will it want to create a new one? do i run any risk of corrupting the array?

I really really really do not want to lose 37gb of mp3's as it took #a while# to rip them... as for all the jpg's........

Looking foward to intellectual muscles of HeXus cracking this one for me....

    thanks all

Sadly no. An array made on a 370 chipset wont pass over to a 370a. I've tried it and someone else I know did as well

Time to get that spare IDE drive out matey.

bah! well thanks for the swift reply shorty. You've saved me from a miserable evening of screaming WHY? WHY MOTHER? jesushellmarywhyisthisnotworkingsobsobsob

guess i 'll have to start begging mates to lend me hard drives.

    ADDITIONAL QUESTION -

it says on the abit website that i have to flash the bios to get the mobo to recognise drives over 137gb, however doing so will corrupt my raid array as it updates the raid chipset bios...dont want this.

what will happen if i plug my mates 160gb drive in without updating the bios? will it not recognise the drive at all or will only 137gb be available on that drive?

    cheers again..

ahahahaha.. was there last friday with my serial ATA RAID-0. Nice way to spend part of St V's evening I tell ya.

Right.. in answer to your other question..

That's an interesting question about the KT-7. Someone else might have a better answer but from memory...

    Don't update that mobo BIOS.

Seriously, if you dont wanna be screaming and crying! Don't update... or you will hose your RAID-0. It's just not worth the risk. Even if you install the matching drivers to match the new BIOS, there is only a 50% chance it will not nuke the array. I've had several successes and several failures with moving/updating Highpoint mounted IDE raids.

Next, the 160gb drive. Actually, I believe the BIOS will see it, it just can't address more than 137gb.. so that is all that will be seen. Im not 100% as it's been a long time since I had a KT133(a) series board. Plugging it into the IDE on the board isn't going to hurt anything. Try it and see

If that doesn't work, time to get a el-cheapo 80gb or 120gb to strip the array of it's data. It's worth keeping hold of that drive when running RAID. My trusty 2 x 160gb IDE (backup) Maxtors saved my arse when my RAID-0 controller corrupted my SATA drives last week.
