    Xbox HD-DVD Drive Fan

Was originally planning to internalise my HD-DVD drive, but after seeing how difficult it is (here), I would rather keep it external or spend the £70 to get the LG combo HD/Blu reader...

Only problem with keeping it external is the noise. I think it is the fan and not the disc spinning noise.

So I am wondering, is it safe to open it up and unplug the fan. Can it be done? Will it overheat?

(Btw, I did try googling for it... gives results only about fan boys lol)

    Cheers

    Re: Xbox HD-DVD Drive Fan

I thought the drive was really quiet!

But then i'm used to the external FireWire cases my other opticals are in, and they sound like vaccum cleaners... noisy ones

If I can find another cheap (even second hand) HD-DVD drive, i'm going to replace the DVD drive in my HTPC. ~25GB per disk is just too much

    Re: Xbox HD-DVD Drive Fan

Does it have a fan? I don't recall seeing an exhaust port on the back.

If not unplugging it, why not get a better fan at the same size (if possible) and replace?

I don't think it's really noisy, but it is noticeable for sure. Didn't realise the combo drive was down as cheap as £70 though. That's good news.

    Re: Xbox HD-DVD Drive Fan

In case I wasn't clear, I meant the X360 HD DVD drive has the fan - not the LG drive. I won't get a chance to test it tonight Blackmage, but will get a chance this weekend. I will post as soon as I know

Thanks! I'll still buy one if it runs safely without the fan I'll disconnect it.

to be honest I really doubt they would have fitted a fan if it wasn't needed.

It works perfectly without the fan (throughout Blood Diamond HD-DVD, so over 2 hours) didn't even get remotely hot... not sure why the fan is there tbh...
