500 Notes for a 100% Gaming rig
Alright lads. Been a while since ive built a PC, but im looking to spend 500/500 Pound on a new system.
I will be needing the base unit + monitor (19")
- 9600 or 8800GT?
- E2140? or the 8 series? (not a great overclocker)
- 250 gb HD
- 2 gig of cheap DDR2? or some decent stuff.
- Budget is fairly tight, so has to be between 500/500
Thanks all
Re: 500 Notes for a 100% Gaming rig
E2180 + Scythe mine ~£70
2GB DDR2 PC6400 ~£30
Abit IP-35 dark raider ~£65
Antec NSK (forget the name) with 430W earth watts ~£60 http://www.ebuyer.com/product/130949
320GB Single platter ~£40
Samsung Optical ~£15
8800GT ~£95
Leaves £125 for a monitor assumign you don't need an O/S
You could get an ATi HD4850 if you sacrifice a bit of monitor quality I'd try and get a 20" screen though I think.
Should be pretty damn quiet with that cooler and will easily overclock to 2.8GHz I would think.
Re: 500 Notes for a 100% Gaming rig
brillaint mike thanks. Im guessing the overclocking is childs paly with these as everyone and their dog seems to be doing it.. Jsut a regular 19" 20" would be fine, nothing special, just looks nice.

Re: 500 Notes for a 100% Gaming rig
Yeah, I mean the board has a native 1333MHz FSB and the chip is only 800MHz so you get that 533MHz for free effectively. The motherboard won't be pushed at all and the chip can take it easily :)
If you do fancy going the seperate case and PSU route as above you might as well spend £10 more on the antec 300 imo. Great cooling in that case.
I thought about the E7200 but you would be lumbered with the annoying intel cooler which isn't a compromise I'm willing to make, it is a nice chip though.
Re: 500 Notes for a 100% Gaming rig
ok thanks u2. I guess bar the cpu, my other concern is the gfx. I mean 9600GT 8800GT or 4850? Ive always been an ATI fan, but obviously bang for buck is key. Im looking to buy the parts on monday, or should i thin kabout waiting a week or 2?
Re: 500 Notes for a 100% Gaming rig
If you can get a 9600GT for around £80 or less it's a good buy. Ebuyer have an 8800GT for £95 which is a good price for that card.
The HD4850 is probably the best bang for buck card we've seen in a while, especially since it's that price at launch. It's only noticeably better up at the high resolutions though. All these card will be good at 1440 x 900 or 1680 x 1050 :)
Re: 500 Notes for a 100% Gaming rig
so for a 20" screen, ud recommend the 8800GT?
cheers mike
Re: 500 Notes for a 100% Gaming rig
Yeah that should last you a long while :) I mean if you can stretch to the HD4850 then go for it but there's nothing wrong with the GT at that resolution.

Re: 500 Notes for a 100% Gaming rig
Not bad CAT. Im thinking going for the 4850 instead of the 8800GT. Whats the real diff between the e2 and the e7
Re: 500 Notes for a 100% Gaming rig
45nm
more cache
High Clock and better overclocking potential
1066FSB (counts against it really but better than the other 45nm's)
Re: 500 Notes for a 100% Gaming rig
id be tempted to pay 130 and get Q6600 tbh... also there is a coolermaster case for £30-40 pound with free good powersupply that i would defintely get to cut cost down.
Hard drive change to a 500gb Samsung F1
I personally would prefer to spend a extra 5 quid for ram with a better company and lifetime warranty i.e. corsair or crucial.

which case would that be. I jsut want the case to look nice and not be a monster :P
Re: 500 Notes for a 100% Gaming rig
I would go for the Antec 300... Awesome cooling for a case this price...
