hmmmm, personally i'd get a 640GB WD instead for £57
but out of them 2 i would get the samsung (i think it is quieter)
edit: but having said that, i have seen quite a few people have problems with Samsung F1's recently... so i'd go for the seagate out of those 2
so: WD 640GB AAKS>Seagate 500GB>Samsung 500GB F1
also i'd be looking at a 500GB WD AAKS drive aswell....
WD do great HD's.
I have 5 Samsung f1's drives running 24/7 ATM and am yet to have any problem with any of them.
And yes, they are the quietest and fastest in their class...
as said above samsung f1 best drives around and everyone knows it... made me move from seagate..
No one can realistically argue that samsungs aren't faster and a shade quieter and cheaper.
Still wouldn't buy one myself though
i can understand all the bad rep that the samsungs are getting lately. but that hasn't put me off. they're quicker and quieter, and on top of that they're cheaper. haven't had one fail yet, touch wood...
Another vote for WD.
Had a samsung F1 DOA, put me right off.
It's the 1Tb Samsung drives that have been having problems. But naturally everyone get's suspicious of the others too.
Only takes one, especially when it comes to HDD's and especially if it happens to you lol
I really don't get all this stupidity over hard drives. Maxtor and IBM had some crap drives years ago, that's about it, and other than that hard drives fail, if one died on you you were just unlucky.
I've had over 150 Samsung HDD's (including 50 1TB F1's) and I've only ever had to RMA for bad sectors after unexpected power outages. I've had 20 Maxtor's (DM10's) and only had to RMA 1 for a similar reason.
To the OP,
The Samsung is cheaper, faster, quieter and after 3 years you'll probably be using another drive so the wrranty doesn't matter too much.
im making a similar decision at the moment, but its out of the 250gb seagate/samsung/WD, i already have a WD drive and tbh its very noisy, my room has a long corridor then opens up and i can hear it all the way from outside my room(pretty far, even down the stairs) so its really made me think about how quiet these really are ment to be. Im using it in a cm690 with 2 extra screws, is there a way to make it quieter except for the elastic?. I know WD are the most reliable imo as ive still got old 5gb hd from them and they work but the similar aged maxtors all died . Only reason im looking at the other companies is that they are cheaper.
Everyone recommends WD as being quiet so i guess im unlucky, based on the quality of the WD drives over the years id say get a WD drive if you can find them >
