    HD 4870 vs GTX 260

These are the two cards I am looking at purchasing when they become available.

The GTX 260 is £270 upwards does anyone know how much the 4870 is likely to cost?

Also, are there any benchmarks for the HD4870 yet?

And the HD4870 is still on for a 25th June release correct?

Thanks for any of my questions you can answer,

    FifthFreedom

I think that the HD4870 will be FAR better than the GTX260 and will possibly be a better alternative to the GTX280.

    There's some bold statements there

I would hope it makes a decent attempt at challenging the GTX260 and if it is released at that price which it should be (or there abouts) it will have the performance per £ advantage, similar to the HD4850

Maybe a bit hopeful saying it might compete with the GTX280 but from HD4850 results there is no doubt in my mind that the HD4870 will beat the GTX260 comfortably. I mean if the HD4850 can remain within 10FPS of the GTX260 then its feasible to think that the bigger brother to the HD4850 should beat it

Re: HD 4870 vs GTX 260

I don't think it will really. It's very dependant on which benchmark/game you use and at what settings. I bet for example that Hexus' tests will show the GTX 260 in front, possibly by quite a margin. On the other hand someone like The Inq or Fud might show the 4870 wins by a margin.

nVidia can always drop the price to eat ATi as well.

Not with GPU's that take up about twice the area on a wafer each!

You don't think they'd be willing to take a loss in the short term just to maintain the performance at each price point lead?

So you don't think that the difference between the HD4850 and HD4870 will be bigger than 10FPS average? Loads of reviews I've read show the HD4850/9800GTX at only 10FPS below the GTX260 performance. I highly doubt the difference between the ATI cards will be as small as that imo.

This is nVidia we are talking about... seriously now they aren't willing to take a loss period.

Will the 4850 OC better than the 4870? Ditto for the GT260 compared to the 280? That will be interesting.

Not sure if its 100% true but its rumoured that a few people took engineering samples of the ATI card past 1000Mhz so that would be a 200Mhz overclock from the HD4870 if there aren't any other restraints like the HD3870 had.

The release of the HD4870 is going to be very interesting indeed
