8800gtx still a good buy today?

Looking to buy a GPU for my new desktop PC, been waiting for the new HD 4870 before pulling the trigger, but prior to hearing about it's imminent arrival I was looking at the 8800GTX...

Tonight I've found an 8800GTX still available for £164 plus postage... do you reckon this is still a good buy for gaming at 1920x1200? it's an OEM version (no brand name), is this important?

Also, have found a 2nd hand BFG 8800 GTX OC WC from a vendor in the US for approx £150 + postage... given the fact that I'm going to watercool my case, this seems like a very good deal for me... what do you reckon?

Since the HD4850 can compete with the 9800GTX and thus the 8800GTX I don't think it's a great buy anymore. It's a bit power hungry and runs a little hot. It's also a bit long so can cause trouble in some cases.

I would say the HD4870 will blow your socks off at 1920 x 1200 so it will be worth waiting for

So you reckon even at £164 the 8800GTX is not worth it? What's the expected RRP for the upcoming HD 4870?

What do you think of the 2nd hand watercooled 8800GTX?

Good price for a watercooled one if thats the direction you are heading with it. But I'm sure it's something you could do yourself to a stock card anyway, and that way you get to pick your own block etc.. (never done water cooling though lol)

The HD4870 is predicted at £185 which if it performs how we think it will makes it a frickin bargain and should wipe the floor with a GTX

You need to learn some maths my friend.

£164 > £125.

And £125 is what a 4850 is costing right now for similar if not better performance than an 8800 GTX.

If you then put in the total cost of ownership - what with the 8800GTX being so power hungry - you're looking at saving even more money.

Coolbies... just didn't want to miss out on a bargain is all (which I kinda thought an 8800GTX for £164 might be! plus they're bloody hard to find right now, so I was excited to find one available!)

I agree to waiting on the new cards to come out and prices to drop on old ones. You can get a 9800GTX for $200 @ newegg now, so price drops over here should happen soon.
