1700+ at the limit
ok so i admit in this field im a bit of a noob
i have a athlon 1700+ on a asus a78v8x-x mbo
adn 256mb of ram
i read a bit about over clocking, and decided to experiment
the fsb was 133 wen i started and the cpu speed was 1.47ghz
ive been putting it up in increments and im now at 180 and the cpu is at 1.98ghz
i think this si as far as i can go, but what is this multiplier stuff, can it ssraise the speed, what should i do next, or is there nething i have missed out?
please help

1) What RAM are you running.
2) Try and get another 256mb of the same RAM as you have now.
Lower the mutlipler to 9.5, and the FSB:RAM is set to 6:6. Then try and get the FSB as far as you can go. If the RAM is PC2700 i would suggest putting 2.7v at about 185mhz (FSB.) But if it is PC3200 then dont worry about it, as that is designed to run at 200mhz anyway.
Once you have got the FSB as far as possible, try and increase the Multipler. This will probably involve upping the volts. Dont go above 1.85v, go until the volts dont make a large difference ~100mhz as any less you wont really notice.
Summary:
Lower multipler
Up FSB
Up volts (RAM)
Up mutlipler
Up volts (CPU)
...........and see how far you get :)
Hope that is of some help.
Will
p.s. is it possible to post the code on the chip?

256 mb 333mhz pc2700 dimm
thats wot the ram is
i understood all u said apart from thsi bit
"If the RAM is PC2700 i would suggest putting 2.7v "
wot dose that mean, im gonna decreae ther multiplier to 9.5 to see if it makes a dfference
-
ok rubbishrubbishrubbishrubbishttttttttttttt
when i restarted to change he multiplier, in my bios i find sum things greyed out, and the cpu speed is 1916 and i cant change thee multiplier or the fsb or the vcore setting, hat the fcuk, please help asap
-
ok restarted and i can change it
sorry ive put the multiplier down to 9.5 and its booted up, ill try changed the fsb now
-
Well pc2700 is designed to run at 333mhz (or 166mhz FSB [as DDR is 2xFSB]) so to get the RAM to 400mhz (pc3200) i would suggest putting 2.7v through it when you hit 185mhz FSB. Otherwise you may find that you cant boot before you get to 200mhz FSB.
-
w8 i have a grweater problem now
i did like u said
took the multiplier from 11 down to 9
got the fsb up to 200, IT WOODNT TAKE NE MORE
so i then upeed the multiplier to 10x and the vlotage to 1.65, and it sorta crashed, lol and now it wont boot at original settings, fsb = 133 mul = 11 vol =1.6,
so im wating for it to cool, cos its pretty warm atm, ne advice?
-
if it doesnt boot, turn the comp on and hold the Insert button on the keyboard.. failing that, unplug it from the wall, plug it back in, and try again.. and finally, failing that, reset the cmos by either connecting the 2 pins, or remove the battery (check your manual first tho)...
good luck with the overclocking :)

ok ive tried your advice and ive done what you said, it still doesnt make a differnece,
i took it in to my network administrator at school and he said it probly isnt and hardware damaged, but that the operating sytem just threw a wobbler.
maybe this is a newb question but what should i do, as i cant currently get hold of an xp cd to put in and repair the os (win xp pro)
can i make a boot disk or something?
i tried making one from my winn2000pro laptop but it wouldnt work in it,
ne help wouldnt be greatly apreciated
cos i have a hell of a lot of coursewrok to do, and its all on the pc thats down atm
thanks

Ask a mate if you can borrow their XP disc? And use your own CD Key of course.
Better get working on that coursework also, its gonna take a hell of a lot for you to pass english.

-
lol,
thats the gay bit, my mate who installed xp and has the xp cd and product key, has buggered off on holiday, is there any other alternatives?
-
u sure u reset cmos mr anderson, cause ur damn unlucky if u managed to damage software/hardware because of boot up failure, cmos usually sorts it.
-
definitly, 100%
what happens is after it shows the post krap, it gives me a list of options, safe mode, safe mode with comadn prompt, last known configuration, or start windows normally, i pick normally, and it brings me to the windows xp loading screen for 1 second, the flashed white and the computer restarts, can anyone confirm that these actions, are most likely the os throwing a wobbler?
-
i havent read this thread properly, but it seems youve just managed to corupt your windows install..... this would be caused by runing your ram or northbridge to fast - they get unstable andwill corrupt everything sent to them...
next time use memtest86 to make sure its compleatly stable before booting windows. i would get that app and run it anyway, find out what your max stable is, then resinstall windows over the top of what youve got, it should fix all the important windows files, and youll be able to recover whats left... or maybe a better way if youve got a spare hdd would be to install onto that, which would leave your corrupted install as-is so that you can get any important files back. if the filesystem has got b0rked then you dont have much chance of getting any files back...
-
Yeah, sounds like your windows install is screwed. When you get the disc/key, do a repair install. They've always worked well for me.
Guys, you're giving him poor advice here IMO. He's got a KT400 chipset board, so it's not going to like FSBs of 180+ much. My advice mate would be to set the FSB to 166, and then increase the multiplier as far as you can (more than likely you won't be able to go above 12.5 with the chip as is). Then, if it's still stable at 2.083GHz (which is 12.5x166), raise the FSB in small increments. If you can get to 180 you'll be running at 2.25GHz which is a pretty nifty overclock. Then, run Memtest85 and the Prime95 Torture Test to make sure your system is stable. Loop 3DMark2001 to make sure your video card is happy running at a high PCI bus speed.

wouldnt bother with 3dm2k1 for benching really... well depends on the card. ive only ever used it for testing overclocked gfx cards, but 3dm2k3 is better for finding p/s or v/s errors. i would suggest finding the max fsb with your mobo, but maybe not as pci will cause loads of problems if you go too high....... so best run the pci within 5% of spec and use max fsb you can with that...

Mr Anderson,
I think that Rave gave some good advice; as a fellow newbie I advocate caution. Blockers was kind enough to pass some advice to me recently for o/c a Barton xp 2600 on a KT6-Delta mobo, as did a few but remember these guys have the know how to sort out the probs. Don't mess with the pc until the deadlines are met or someone is on hand to help if things get sticky. Bit late now of course....But serves a a good reminderto other newbies on the pitfalls of tech joy!!
Good luck , I follow with interest your thread. Do let us know what happened.. :-)

ok guys, i know im sorta veering slightly of the HARDWARE AND OVERCLOCKING side of things, but this is because of it, lol
i got my mits on a xp pro cd :)
and i used a boot disk to give me a command line interface, and can access the files on the disk,
i think the most usefull file thats on it, is the setup.exe file
but when i tpye setup.exe it says
"this program cannot be run in dos mode,
what can i do please sum1 help, im in dire need of my pc.
-
get into d:\i386 (d: [enter], cd i386 [enter]) assuming d: is your cd drive,
type WINNT
viola :)

-
ok thanks
i have a worse problem now
it says it needs a 330 megabyte or bigger hd, and says its unable to find such a hard drive, i think this is because when i booted up from thi boot disk, it installed its wee files, which are like 1 megabyte, and when i do the dir command, it asys theres like 904kbytes free, and the volume of c: drive is ram drive, what should i do, anybody know?
-
ok, so i formatted my 40gb hd, and in the help file from my boot disk, it says tot tpye sys d:
because d is the drive letter, as it moved them all forward
when i type this it says CANNOT SPECIFY A DEFAULT DRIVE
plz can anybody help, this sys program, copies the fiels over to my hd, and makes it into a hd again, so i can then install xp, i just need to get this little bit sorted
plz plz plz help
-
do you have a windows98 cd, so that you can boot to dos, and sort it all out from there? this boot disk your friend made seems a bit sketchy tbh, cos its not letting you install windows easily.
mark
-
ok so i got the hd formated, and i installed the windows, sortof, it copied siome files then stopped doin nethin, and said it was copying fiesl, so i rebooted, when i reboot without the boot disk in the drive and the cd n the drive it brought up the windows xp installer, but when i go to install it, it says it cannot find the end user lisence agreement
anyone got any ideas?
-
do a quick format of the harddrive and start again (format c: /q), does the windows setup say something about you not having smartdrive? cos if you have it loaded it means windows takes like 30mins to install rather than 4hours.. hmmm
seems a right bastard this computer of yours :(
mark
-
yes im beginin to h8 it lol
yeah it says i dont have it
but as i dont have an osi cant download it
were would one get smart drive? can it be fitted on a floppy
plz help
-
smartdrv... its on the windows 98 cd. i'll see if i can find it and upload it for you, it might not work, but we'll see, give me a few mins
edit:
http://www.streetster.co.uk/smartdrv.exe 45k there we go :)
-
ok thx, but the problem, i need to install it on my machine, so itll have to fit on a disk, and wil have to be able to be ran from ms dos, can this be done
-
just thought, idd keep you guys posted, its installing the files as we speak, at 63%, im having to skip the odd file, but i think it should install ok, what a harrowing tale this has been so far, i duno how long i have to go tho, till its finished lol
-
I KNEW IT WASNT OVER
ARGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
after the dos part of the installlation is complete i go into the next part, it says the file ftdisk.sys is corrupted
and then exits installation
please please please does anybody know what to do next?

The A7V8X-X does not allow vDIMM manipulation. Neither does it support 200FSB, BUT you can run the memory at 200Mhz and the CPU at 166FSB, but that kills performance. Also, the PCI/AGP bus cannot be locked on this board and could be the cause of your hard drive corruption. If you wanted to overclock with this board, you should have stuck with a 166FSB and just increase the multiplier and, if need be, increase vCore (voltage of CPU) as this mb has this feature.
Now, as for your installation problems, is everything back at stock speeds (ie. FSB back at 133 and with your usual 11 multiplier)? If not, go back to stock. If it is already at stock, I have no idea why you're having such bad luck in reinstalling Windows. Unless of course your overclock fubarred your hd so much, that it got itself some bad sectors...highly unlikely, but possible.
-
thanks for all that advice, i think the hard drive is ok, cos i can scandisk on ot and chkdsk onit, thru the command line interface, and it turned out ok, so im reformatiing, and my m8 is burning me a new xppr cd, cos this 1 has one or 2 scratches, but if i get it up ana running, ill take your advice mate, ill keep u posted as to what happpens with the new installation
-
ok, so due to my infinte compuuter knowledge (total lie) i got it to work, and now ive installed windows, got rid of the viruses, etc etc, and beign a total retard, i wana try to overclock again (the thing that i broke my pc doing, last time)
thers been a lot of talk of what todo while my pc was down,
so ill say all the specs, and what im tryn to acheive, and hope sum1 can point me in the right direction
amd athlon xp1700+
asus a7v8x-x mobo
maxtor 40gb hard drive
256mb ddr pc2700 ram
etc etc
i think sum said up ther i could get it up to 2.4ghz is this really possible?
can sum1 provide me with a retards guide to overclocking, lol
with safety precautions, cos i could do without another xollosal crash before my courswork is finished.
thank you in advance

ok....
well, basically, dont do anything until you've done your coursework :D
other than that,
set the FSB to 166, and the ram speed to 100% (then it will be running in sync with the fsb, thus greater performance). and also set the multiplier to 10x
that will give you 1660mhz (ie 2000+ athlon), from there you could try increasing the fsb further, perhaps 170, 175, 180, but only in small steps.. if it boots to windows run something like prime95 for a bit, see if its stable, if it crashes, reboot, and increase the vCore one notch, boot, see if its stable, if it is increase the FSB some more... remember to keep an eye on the temperature of the cpu aswell..
my cpu is currently at 11x200 (ie 2.2Ghz), at 1.7v... which isnt too bad, like a 800mhz overclock? but some people can get higher, some people get lower.. its all chance, but like i said, make sure you finish your coursework and back it up somewhere else before you go fiddling about :)

2 questions bout ure post
how do i set the ram speed to 100%? in the bios wot bit of it? i couldnt find it
i have hte newest si sioft sandra version, but how do i find out the temp of the cpu, and what range would you conside to be acceptable, and what is dangerous?
-
ok... 2nd menu thing from the left in the bios, then advanced chipset features (think its 2nd or 3rd option down).. that should allow you to fiddle with the fsb and such, and the ram speed...
you might need to get the latest bios if there is one about, they can be updated in windows which saves you from booting into dos and doing it from there...
latest bios
think thats the windows bios updater
as for your temperatures... you really want them to be in the 40s or lower.. 50's is borderline and 60 is really not good, and you will decrease the life of the cpu... however if its stable at 60 some people consider it to be acceptable, however below 50 is generally good :)
-
Like I mentioned before, the A7V8X-X does not have the required AGP/PCI locks to achieve high FSB overclocking. To be on the safe side and reduce the chances of hard drive corruption, you should leave the RAM and FSB at 166 (despite the fact your previous overclocking attemps yielded you a 180FSB...that's where the problems began) and simply increase your multiplier and vCore accordingly to achieve stability.
As for reaching 2.4Ghz. A more realistic goal should be > 2Ghz at first considering you haven't mentioned what kind of cooling you have and 2.3Ghz or greater can start getting toasty.
What range temp? Personally, I don't care much for temps. Just as long as everything is running stable, then everything's sweet.
-
:o didnt realise it wasnt an nforce2 board... thought it was the same as mine, when it obviously isnt, prolly best to stick at 166mhz fsb like Rod says, and just increase the multiplier.

Guys,
This has been an interesting look at o/c. Fair play to MrAnderson for persistence. Newbs like us need you learned folk out there!
I have a xp2600 Barton, with a MSI KT Delta( upto 400FSB) 512 mb DDR, Geforce MX400 64 mb, M Audio Delta 44 s/card. Most I've got is an increase to 187 FSB from obviously 166 , before it won't boot. Left the multiplier at auto. Have read up and think a vcore increase could help to boost fsb further. Not sure about the multiplier, although I have checked out AMD' s home site for info on the specs for the chip. Think my fan is ok. Rated for a Xp3200 anyway.
Any ideas on o/c further? Ram is running at 333mhz. All help appreciated.
