    thermal compound removal

my xigmatek hdt s1283 (somethin like that) just died, the mounting clips decided to let it swing away from the CPU and it refused to lock again (when they do lock, the weight of the cooler jerks them off again)
so im back to the stock intel cooler. Can i use white spirit and a glasses cloth to clean the thermal paste off the CPU (it evaporates very fast) or will it leave a residue.

    Re: thermal compound removal

I would use isopropyl alcohol which can be found in CD lens cleaning kits.

Wipe off as much termal paste as you can with a kitchen towel, then put some isopropyl on a cotton bud and clean the rest off. Leave it fo a little bit, then apply new thermal paste.

    Re: thermal compound removal

never mind, i got the xigmatek working, the instructions and the arrow on the knobs said to turn anti clockwise to lock it, but i examined the mechanism and realised it had to turn clockwise.
