overclocking - mystery multiplier

im trying to overclock my q6600 with my asus p5q pro, but for some reason, whenever i change anything, the multiplier goes down to 6x, even if i set it to 8x or 9x.
This happens all of the time, even if i do a small increase to 300 fsb, or leave it at default settings (defaults only work on auto)
DOes anyone have any ideas on how to fix this.

the multiplier reduction is a feature to save power and heat, it will ramp up to the set multi with high load.

to disable, in BIOS find EIST and C1E, disable those

Or leave them on and look at your readings when running Prime95.

The asus boards overclocks the cpu automatically when it needs more system resources or else it will "idle" to save power.You should notice an increase in the multiplier to 8x when doing video encoding,playing games etc.

There is nothing wrong with it.Will be fast when u need it.

It doesn't overclock them, it just resets the multiplier back to default.
