Re: New System: Final Build - 25/06/08

I would get PC6400 RAM, it is enough to run the q6600 at 3.6GHz which is around it's natural limit on air anyway.

Good cooler but you will need a fan unless you already have one.

Case is personal I'm sure but it's a bit pricey for my liking, especially given it doesn't really move the game on from the £100 or less bracket.

Re: New System: Final Build - 25/06/08

If you are set on the graphics card i would buy that now and then look more closely at the rest since the stock of the 4870 is supposedly very low with only normal quantities a bit into July.

With that motherboard i would have a read around first, i was going to get that same one but there were numerous reports of lack of compatibility with certain RAM etc. especially Corsair stuff. Apart from that issue, of what i read it is a very good board.

The Velociraptor is a choice which is generally solely based on the personal needs as it is worth paying for to some but not others, but if you bought a similar size 7200RPM hard drive or even bigger you would have in excess of ~£120 extra to spend, maybe on a bigger power supply if you are thinking of crossfire in the future.

As Mike said cases are obviously personal choice but i have recently bought the P182, and it is a fantastic case, sleak and lots of removable things for extra flexibilty and in general a great buy for about half the price of the one listed above.

Re: New System: Final Build - 25/06/08

Personally I like the Cosmos 1100 but its full price is too much, but have you noticed its on 'Today Only' @ £145.64!

Also I would get the Thermalright Ultra 120 eXtreme for only £4 more and as staffsmike said get a decent fan, personally have the Nocs P12's here and they are great, a little more money than most fans but worth it

Other than that I really like the components you have chosen, nice build

I really wouldn't go for the Velociraptor, despite their speed they don't perform any better than the best 'normal' HDDs (Samsung Spinpoint F1s). You could get a 500Gb drive for a quarter of the price http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductId=807030 or 1Tb for half the price http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductId=807030.

640GB Western Digital AAKS are good fast drives too. The velociraptor is extremely fast and quiet when taken out of the big heatsink thing but is a lot of money to spend on 300GB.. It's your money though

They won't come close in terms of access times though....

Re: New System: Final Build - 25/06/08

Thanks for all the advice & help Guys ( i always enjoy reading your comments).

    - Let's just say i been holding out since 2002 to upgrade my PC & i agree the Case and HDD are dam pricey but i thought i would fork out the extra cash & treat myself . I will be using my existing Seagate 300gb as storage

    - done some reading & agree with Mike (changed Ram)
    - Checked the mobo with the Ram (can't find no compatibility issue's)
    - Changed CPU Cooler & added fan (checked to make sure the cooler will fit the mobo - yes it does).
    - OMG thanks for letting me know about the price of the case

    Here is my final Build:

Looks great now, let us know how you get on. Do remember that tip about the velociraptor, if you find it too noisey take the drive off its heatsink thing and apparently it becomes the quietest drive SPCR ever tested

As long as there is a bit of airflow over it the heatsink will not be required anyway

Are you going to order the other bits now? The Cosmos case is only on offer for a day until tomorrow lunch time! Maybe pay for and order the bits and then make another order just for the graphics card so it doesnt delay the order.
