    PC Build Issues

    Lo,

I've built a rig using the following components:

    Abit iP35 Dark Raider Mobo
    TwinX 4GB TWIN2X4096-6400C5
    q6600 CPU
    625W EMAX EMD625AWT MODU82+

Now, when the system is switched on, the fans move, the hard drives start up but then it all goes dead. A few seconds later it restarts. The fans come one and go off again. During the full cycle, nothing appears on the monitor.

What could be causing these issues?

According to SCAN, Mobo is fine, PSU is fine and this a is brand new CPU after they claimed the old one was faulty and causing my issues. I know this after my First RMA.

Could there be another cause of this other than SCAN's testing leaves a lot to be desired?

    Thanks for any help,
    FifthFreedom

    Re: PC Build Issues

Try using just 1 or 2 sticks of RAM to find out if any of the are faulty, then make sure you have the right volatge for the RAM in the BIOS.

If it does come on second time around, is it the double-boot issue?

    Re: PC Build Issues

@ mrt9888 - Done that no change. RAM sticks are either both faulty or they are both working

@ chaddera - It doesn't come on 2nd time round. It never displays anything on the screen and continually reboots.

SCAN are trying to say that the RAM I bought could not be compatible (i.e. it's my fault) Can anyone tell me for sure that it should work with this board?

    Re: PC Build Issues

Hmmm... I have not heard of there being compatobility issues, on abit's website I found a very unhelpful "compatibility chart"

Went on consoirs website, filled out some forms of what happened and they said that the best thing that they can do is to send you a replacement

I would RMA it with Scan or if they won't let you consoir

Well the power up, power down then power up again is perfectly normal its a power test. I have an IP35-E and mine does that.

Does your monitor power up at all or does the stand-by light flash?

This might be a silly question but have you connected the GFX card to the PSU? because it sounds to me like its the GPU thats the problem, not enough juice... or it needs to be returned.

Also, are you over clocking from the outset? it may explain why your system isn't posting.

Edit: is this a continuous cycle of start-up, restart?

    Re: PC Build Issues

Are you getting any beep/error codes? Does your mobo do POST error voice reporting over the onboard soundcard (my A8N SLI premium does)?

I had a similar sounding issue with no POST but I was getting a beep code pattern which was not listed in the motherboard manual. At first I though it was my PSU, then GPU... however when I connected the onboard sound and heard the POST error reporter, it was reporting a memory issue.

Cue 2x1GB Ballistix RMA back to Crucial. One of the modules was faulty. I had missed this when testing my RAM slots with single modules.

I'd double-check your RAM modules one at a time, and make sure you're using the right RAM slots.

    Re: PC Build Issues

Another possible issue could be simply that the motherboard doesn't support 2GB modules with the default shipping BIOS, or that the voltages are incorrect.

    Re: PC Build Issues

OK, I'm going to respond to each of you in turn.

@ timread There is no speaker in my case (silly I know) so no beep codes are available to me. If I get a chance I'll "borrow" one of another rig and see where tha leaves me

@ Lucio and Blitzen - During SCAN's first attempt at RMA'ing the motherboard, they say they updated the BIOS to the latest version on the Mobo. If there a way to alter voltages from their defaults while the system doesn't even boot?

    Re: PC Build Issues

With the RAM volts, the corsairs are stated to boot at 1.8v (the sticker on the side says so).

Admittedly though I run my 2 x 2gb same Corsair at 1.9v (it's just the way it ended up).

As per the Abit thread, I recently built a system with IP35 Dark Raider & same RAM (initially) and it worked - just the double boot issue needed resolving.

Looking at a picture of the m/board you have the bios post LED readout, does that come on, show any codes?

Is the cpu heat sink/fan seated correctly?

(apologies if teaching to suck eggs, trying to help! - self build very stressful first sign of things going boobs-up).

    Re: PC Build Issues

    CPU + heatsink/fan is fine.

I've checked and re-checked this several times...

And there are only 2 LED's on the board. One to show board is powered, the other shows when the PC is on.

I'm not sure what you mean by LED readout.

Nope, you have to change the voltage whilst booting it from 1GB stick. If I were you I'd spend another £40 or so on a 2 x 1GB PC6400 kit. As long as you're using Vista64 it won't be wasted money.
