    Boing boing BOOM

is what my hdd maybe doing soon as it seems to be playing up - it is best part of 4 years old now, longest i've ever had a hdd. so looking for some advice.

my recent history is with sammy's as they have been quite good money for what you got and they have been fairly quiet (at least the ones i've had have been).

now, i don't need a masses of space as i've got a 320gb sammy for storage, so another 320ish would do and money is a bit tight at the moment. so what would people recommend? WD or Seagate?

so to sum up, ideas for a new hdd

    1. 320Gb(ish) capacity
    2. quiet and reliable, if fast can be gotten in there i'll have that to
    3. value for money and not ott - unfortunately sma formula milk comes first on the shopping list

Something like the western digital or samsung single platter 320GB's would fit the bill and they are pretty fast

The WD's are hard to come by but the sammys are around.

yes... That would do you very well.

The SE drives are very very good and the RE drives are some of the best none SCSI drives ever made.

Yes.. but you have to be sure that is the single platter, if thats what you want.

I have the 320GB AAKS (2 platter) and its a great drive, very quiet and reliable but there are quite annoyingly, two versions and that is most likely the one I have.

don't suppose there is anyway to identify which is which? would be a bummer if i went to get one home and find it's wrong.

edit. from looking around the part for the single platter is WD3200AAKS-00B3A0 and the dual platter version is WD3200AAKS-00VYA0

twill have to ring md up in the morning to enquire.
