    memory advice

    Hello,
i like testing software. some software isnt compatible with vista so i want to use a virtual machine to run windows 2000 pro Sp4.
it works ok but i have to close opera since vista is using superfletch to make best use of the memory which means there isnt enough for virtualbox.

from crucial i can get 2gb of ram for £35 or 4GB for £65 or £131 for 8GB
if you know of any better places for ddr2 for my asus P5k-wifi please tell me (aka cheaper but still good quality)
now atm i have windows vista 32bit so max limit is ofcourse 4gb
i currently have two 1GB sticks of ram. i have 4 slots.
what ever option i choose will fill up all the ram slots. so whenever i upgrade the ram again i will have to take out all the ram ive got atm.
so if say i paid £65 and brought 4gb of ram two 2gb sticks and for now only benefited from 4gb max of it would this cause any issues? like blue screen of my motherboard is P5k-wifi
when i get some more cash i will probaly get vista 64Bit oem
just want the best option for future proofing. without having to later on remove all the memory and stick in 4 new sticks to get max.
    thanks in advance

    Re: memory advice

those prices are pretty much reflective of the market price for pc2-6400 at the moment...

the only thing with 4 DIMMs is that on some motherboards you need to give the NB a little bit more juice to get it running stably, and under certain circumstances it can actually slow things down, so you are correct in that your plumping for 2 brand new sticks for 4GB......

and a 32bit O/S will only recognise 3.5 ish GB

personally i would go for 4GB if i was in your situation, and that way.. if you decided that you did need 8GB you could just get another 4GB kit and whack that in...

    Re: memory advice

Hi Taktak,so you would reccomend buying the two sticks of 1GB?
of is it better to get one 2GB stick?
this is the ram ive got atm link
would i need to give a little more juice if i got the same memory as ive got atm so i double the ram to 4GB using 4 1GB sticks on my P5k-wifi ap motherboard?

If you want 4GB then i would reccomend selling what you currently have, and buying a new 2*2GB set.

you may not need to up the NB voltage but you do need to on some motherboards (it's easy to do anyway) it's all a case of seeing what happens when you put it in and set VDIMM to whatever is stated on the RAM
