Q6600 @ 3Ghz - temps high?

Hiya,
I have just built my new computer, and have overclocked the processor to 3Ghz, but according to coretemp cores 0 and 1 are running at 80 degrees, and 2 and 3 are running at 70 degrees under 100% load with Prime95. This seems high to me?
I have tried remounting the heatsink (Scythe Mine) and putting extra paste on but hasn't made a difference.
There seems to be quite a large gap between the heatsink and the processor because when i put only a small amount of paste on it didnt spread onto the base of the heatsink. I have now put some more on and it spread out, but isnt their supposed to be better contact than that?

there isnt ment to be a gap between the heatsink and the cpy, granted there will be a very small one but it would be filled by the thermal paste, would try and reseat it if i was you cos 80C is way to hot but id recommend using some other temperature software just to rule out the possiblity of false results.

I have reseated it several times and its made no difference.
What other temperature monitoring software is there which is accurate?

Okay, well I have reseated it again, but this time turned the heatsink around 90 degrees so the fan is facing upwards. Now I get temps in coretemp of between 50-55 degrees C for all cores, which is about a 25-30 degree drop.

Does this seem more reasonable?

I don't see why it should matter which way the heatsink goes round, and it doesnt say anything in the instructions. Hmm

it can depend on the flow of air in your case. How have you got your fans set up, is it a front to back layout so front sucks and back blows?, do you have a top fan also? it can help as the air can be forced over the fins in many ways and so remove the heat quicker.

Thats roughly the same ballpark my Q6600@3Ghz operates (45-58 under load)...

That's encouraging then.
I am not going to overclock any higher than this anyway, so if a max temp of about 55-60 degrees is okay when running Prime95 I will be happy?

i3f you hit 60C while on prime and you are not hopeing to increase clocks i think its safe to say its good, prime pushes the cpu to the limit and it would never get to them temps(unless its REALLY hot) so its safe.

Consider sticking the side fan at the top (thats what i've done with the same case and cpu). So front, back and top, with cpu fan blowing upwards too. (Although i have a copper scythe ninja and 58 degrees at 3.16ghz)

Download Realtemp, thats the most accurate temp program. Also what voltage are you using for 3ghz?
