    Do I need more memory???????

    Hi all,

In my current system I have 4gigs of memory running Win7 64bits.
I paly a few games and mainly watch movies online.

I seen memory prices dropping and wondering should I or do I increasing to 8gigs of ram.

    Question is
    1. should I take advantage of low prices and upgrade?
    2. What benifits would I see with more memory?

    Thanks

Re: Do I need more memory???????

From what you have said, I wouldn't think you'd need to upgrade your ram unless you had money burning a hole in your pocket!!

Both my server and HTPC have 8Gb of ram in them but I don't think for one minute either of them require that much!! It was just too good a deal to pass up so I went for a 16Gb kit from Scan and that was that!!
What sort of games do you play? Resolution wise etc?

Re: Do I need more memory???????

i was running quite happily on 4 gig, but got another 4 in an impulse buy. Net effect, computer happy to have pretty much everything i want open at one time, and large 64 player games of battlefield run better. 3d analysis software wayyy happier, and autocad too. I wouldn't have a modern system with less than 8GB and for £23 for the extra 4 I really think it's a no brainer. Not everyone needs 8GB but for that little, I think it's best to have the capacity there. I wouldn't reach for 16GB unless there's a really good offer on it. If you're DDR3 buy the RAM. If still DDR2 put the money towards a new system instead.

I would go for at least 8Gb.

I recently went to 8GB and I turned off the page file for windows and the system is more responsive.

Also playing skyrim, I have the HD textures installed and it runs using about 5GB of memory and it seems fine.

The more ram the better but no need to have more than you will use. Waste of money.

Re: Do I need more memory???????

I would agree definitely that if your on DDR2 leave it as is and put towards a newer DDR3 system of some description..

I'm still on 6Gb with my two i7 rigs but I feel when I upgrade I will have at least 8Gb in there, maybe 16Gb if I can find another kit I like. I currently have 8Gb sat in front of me of DDR3 that I can't use!

Re: Do I need more memory???????

Their are very few games or applications that require more then 4gig of ram, as mentioned above a heavily modded Skyrim or Fallout can chew thru over 4gig but you need the GPU and CPU to back it up.

    Yes upgrade to more.

Remember, not everything is about games, just windows and it's services can eat up a lot of memory.
