    Re: orthos?

Orthos is not good for 4 cores afaik. It can only do 2 threads at the same time. You need Prime95 to test all 4 cores at once.

    Re: orthos?

Well you just run two instances of it and assign the cores appropriately, but other programs are probably less bother.

You can do that, but P95 can do it in one go

I used to be an orthos fan, but I have been converted. (I will still use orthos over P95 for dual cores though...)

so you reckon i should get prime95?
also how long do you usually run it for the first time you test a self built pc?

    Re: orthos?

I would run it for 30 mins or so when testing small changes. 6 hours when you have your final clocks..

    Re: orthos?

24 hours for your final clock. I've seen far too many systems fail in the last few hours

Some people do 48, but I tend to find 24 to suffice

    Re: orthos?

I never have the patience to run for 24 hours, but the more the better. I find a month of using without crashing the best stability test

i dont think ill have that much patience either tbh
btw why stress test it for 24 hours when you will never actually be using it at full load for 24 hours?
    thanks for the advice though

    Re: orthos?

Even stress testing for 24 hours doesn't guarantee stability.

The more you test the more likely your computer is stable. Even with 24 hours of stress testing, possibly 1 in 1,000 PCs will still be unstable. If you stress test for 48 hours that would become something like 1 in 10,000. Maybe 6 hours is 1 in 500 or something. Note: these numbers are made up to illustrate the point.

As n increases towards infinity, probability of stability converges toward 1. But for most people its enough to test 24/48 hours to convince them its stable enough.
