    Motherboard query

Recently I purchased the creative x-fi xtreme gamer soundcard, installed it, loaded the drivers etc when I went to play any media on various player it kept crashing the pc and restarting windows. So sent back card and a replacment was sent. Same thing happened but even before I opened a media file.

So I came to the conclusion that it must be my motherboard's Asus A8N VM - CSM pci sockets.

So instead of the onboard sound which I had no problem with but wanted better, I have got the creative xmod whch works fine.

Now I have the following options and would like a bit of advice:

    • Keep to external sound module

    • Find another Asus A8N VM - CSM and do a swap

    • Upgrade motherboard that will support amd athlon 4800+ 64x2 939

    Re: Motherboard query

    Thats odd :S

have you tried using another PCI slot?
maybe try an audio driver update? Although I recon youve already tried that..

EDIT: actually, as you mentioned you had it replace, I doubt its the socket itself (as you said yourself), Im guessing it was a driver problem..

Personally (as I can't part with anything lol) Id keep your sound card and try to sort it out when you get the time, even if you getting working, and you still have you Creative Xmod, you could install it on another system (if you have another) or sell the one you like least

    Re: Motherboard query

yep tried both soundcards in both pci sockets, previously I had always used onboard for the past two years but wanted a change, so I used the drivers on cd that came with card plus got the updated drivers from the website still same problem so that's why I got the xmod as a replacement.

The pci-e socket I have no problems with cos thats where my graphics card is. I went to a local pc repair shop and they suggested I reinstall windows but I just don't want to mess with the operating system at the moment.

Actually I bought 2 xmods just incase the first didn't work (with my luck at the moment). It was about 70 miles round trip to get it so I thought it best to buy two, I can always sell one on or even both in the future.

I'm going to keep the sound card for my new build in June. But I'm just wondering since the xmod works fine in the usb port whether its worth replacing/upgrading motherboard since in about 3/4 months pc will become my secondary pc.

Oh and I just purchased gigaworks T40 speakers (should arrange next week) all going well will have a nice setup.

    Re: Motherboard query

me personally, wouldnt replace the motherboard as of yet, keep the cash for your new build but yeah you could always hang onto the one not working, and try it june

If needs be, you could try repairing your OS install, I agree that reinstalling the whole things gets quite annoying!

    Re: Motherboard query

Just a bit of an update. Its July now and have had a bit of a setback on my new build - done my back in (doc reckons I've got a slipped disc). So am using the xmod with my T40 speakers no problems.

Got some parts for the for the upgrade/new build:

Antec sonata iii case with psu
    powercolor HD3850 512mb
    LG dvd rewriter

Now I'm thinking of getting my hands on a Soundblaster X-Fi Platinum Fatal1ty soundcard for the newbuild.

Just a quick edit : I went ahead and bought the Soundblaster X-Fi Platinum Fatal1ty soundcard so hoping to get my hands on it in the next week or so. Next thing is to decide on newbuild motherboard. Also thinking of buying a replacement of my mobo asus a8n-vm csm just to check whether it has a faulty pci sockets or if I just had bad luck with my xtremegamers although I did hear a rumor that there were some conflicts between creative soundcards and some mobos chipsets, so it could be that.
