    overclocking q6600 question

ok, i have an asus p5q pro, and a q6600 G0, but ive reached my experience limit at 2.9ghz! I know ive probably got a dud, but it would be nice to get to get beyond 3ghz.

ATM, i have all voltages on auto except cpu vcore on 1.325 (for 2.9 ghz) I have to set it beyond 1.4 @ 3 ghz to get into windows, and it still fails prime 95. My guess is that i need to increase some other voltages, but i dont know what, so i thought i should set exerything to a reasonable maximum, say 1.45 for cpu vcore, and whaterver for everything else, overclock it and minimise voltages later.

My question is, what other voltages should i change? and what would be a reasonable upper limit?

Oh, i have a Xigmatek hdt s1283, and my 2.9ghz load temps on prime 95 large FFTs (max heat one) average 48C and sometimes reach 49C

    Re: overclocking q6600 question

Well, i don't think temperature is an issue although when you get to around 3.2Gb or more you'll need a good HSF.
I would go back to standard Bios and set CPU voltage and RAM voltage to manual. Also set your PCIe lanes to manual 100Hz and also PCI lanes the same, saves them jumping up when you overclock automatically and damaging something.
I wouldn't have the RAM or CPU linked when overclocking(so select unlinked if it's in there).
Try setting your northbridge-CPU strap to 1333MHz too.
Then you should be able to take your CPU frequency up in small increments... then altering voltages to help boot or instability issues

    Re: overclocking q6600 question

p5q boards have been reported to be bad overclockers, :S ditto what pc geek said, if you can't unlink RAM try setting it to a lower divider and increasing fsb slightly; hang in there mate

    Re: overclocking q6600 question

The P5Q isn't being overclocked technically. It has a native FSB of 1600MHz (or 400MHz in real terms).

    Re: overclocking q6600 question

thanks a lot for the advice. I dont know which tip did it, but i tried all that and now im 2 hrs stable on prime95 (still goin) with 1.3325v cpu vcore, and all of the tips you posted. Ill probably try to get to 3.2ghz and leave prime95 on overnight. 3.2ghz will be enough for me.

    Re: overclocking q6600 question

I've just stumbled into 3.159 ghz on my q6600 and the only hurdle i hit so far was to tell it to leave ram alone and to let me set its frequency - without that it wouldn't boot. Everything else i still had on auto.
