About LinkBacksCurrently using Kill Disk to erase my 160GB Hard drives. Taking AAAAGGGEEESSS, using US DoD erase method. Not even done the first pass yet and I started it at 9am! Currently 26% with 31hrs left! Have two of these to do so will be a while.

you could use the D-Ban Harddrive Nuke as it will give you a view more options for erasing the disks, even the quick run one can take 4 hours+ on a 500gb hd
I use the linux DD command to write all zeros to the disk. Takes a while and theoretically not as secure as a DoD wipe - but unless you are really paranoid and going to start taking the disk apart and looking at the platters under a tunnelling Electron microspe (or other invasive techniques) its good enough - particularly if you are going to re-use the disks in house.
Still takes an age though - but it is only one pass. You are writing to every single location on the disk so it will take a while!
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/xxx
(where xxx is the drive in question, hda, hdb, sda or whatever)

My broadband speed - 750 Meganibbles/minute
Eraser works well for me.... It takes a long time too though, but it can do DoD and other fancy stuff
I would be scared to do the linux one, just in case I get the wrong drive

Too true! (As I discovered the other day when I accidentally wrote a disk image to my Ipod instead of the USB disk drive. It got very sad as its OS and data partitions were splattered with the data!! one of those "Oh n..." moments!)Originally Posted by SiM

Yeah that is the bonus of it
I set all four of the drives in the raid going at the same time, not to much slow down on the speeds either
A shotgun and a flamethrower can kill a drive too.
I'd also recommend D-ban or Eraser which has a handy erase recycle bin / right click delete as well...
Are these the programs, which write lots of Zeros?
Do as peterb says, just write zeros. Recovery is impossible, ignore the paranoid and uninformed!
