Nvidia 680i MB and 45n processors?

it is my understanding that the Intel 45nn type processors won't work in the Nvidia 680i SLi MB i was looking at the Q9300 but that is a 45nn.

can anybody recommend a processor for this MB

Re: Nvidia 680i MB and 45n processors?

The 45nm CPUs should work on 680i boards just fine, provided you have a recent BIOS. However, the 680i boards generally do not have ideal GTL voltage options for the 45nm, so you may be better off with a 65nm chip.

The Q6600 is not much slower than a Q9300, and it should beable to overclock better, should you choose to do so.

Quad 45nm are not supported by 680i boards when I last checked.

mine does, so what makes you think that ?

its even wrote on the box that it does, although you had to have 1305 bios or higher to boot with one.

Your 'my system' says you have a 65nm chip.. is it out of date? If so, what are you currently running?

Re: Nvidia 680i MB and 45n processors?

a q6600, but it says on the box it supports 45nm cpus and if you head over to the asus vip forum you will see a lot of posts from people using them in the striker extreme sub forum

the only reason i havn't upgraded the cpu is i dont need to yet as i wouldnt gain much of a speed increase unless i blew a lot of money.

just pointing out the facts as i looked into this when choosing this board, lacacy one obviously hasnt checked in the past few months what some 680i boards do support.

when i say "mine does" im refering to the board not my setup tho!

Thanks for your replies. So what SLI MB and CPU combo do you guys recommend? i have the opportunity to exchange the 680i I also think it would be nice to have a MB with PCi E 2.0

well either way i proved that 680i chipsets support 45nm, so i will leave it there for now as i cant be arsed to go through the vip asus forum and post links to the 45nm quads

To be honest I'd stick with the 680 and get a Q6600 to be safe. They're fab chips, and any performance difference between an overclocked Q6600 and overclocked 45nm Quad isn't going to be enough for a serious difference in the real world.

PCI-E 2.0 is similarly not important yet - we're not yet to the point of filling PCI-E 1.0 bandwidth, even in SLI.

You proved your box has a sticker that claims to work with 45nm CPUs.. that doesn't fill me with confidence. I'd rather have a CPU that works out of the box, without needing to worry about bios versions etc.

so get a newer board. quite simple really. the original poster was not asking that question though, you just hijacked the thread when i pointed out 45nm chips do work on certain 680i boards or am i missing something ?

i quite simply started out by answering his question didnt i ?
