TBH nowadays i wouldn't (and don't) i'd just use 64bit vista... unless your in dire need of XP...
Up to you really, Chances are if you use a lot of older software then something will end up not working on Vista but otherwise just go with that by itself.

[QUOTE=tensim;1468643][QUOTE=ezri;1468638]Does it sound like a two-tone high/low constant sound and the computer still works fine even though it's making this noise?Nothing I'm aware of. My old Abit board one day started doing that after I flashed the BIOS - I'm guessing a setting in the BIOS is making it do that as when you flash you go back to defaults. I could never find the option however, so I had to unplug the 4 pin jumper from the case to the motherboard called "Speaker" so that it didn't drive me insane. The computer was 100% stable however.
Yep, that's the noise... anything to worry about?
This was also an old board - the two tone noise might be worth investigating a bit more on the newer boards. Some things to check:
1. Try going into the BIOS and checking out the CPU temperature, let us know what it is - I assume this is also when the CPU fan isn't spinning
2. Make sure you have something, whether it be the cpu fan or a case fan, plugged into the "CPU_FAN" header on the board. My Abit plays hell with me if I don't have anything plugged into that header.
Dual Boot on 2 hard drives is great - just one tip, if you do go dual boot make sure you unplug one drive whilst you install the operating system so only 1 drive is active, then when you install the other operating system on the other drive, unplug the original then install that. When they are both done - plug them both in. If you don't then the installer automatically edit's the boot.ini file with random rubbish that you don't want - instead just press F12 on boot up and pick which hard drive you want to boot from. What do you guys think about the dual-boot my mate reckons I should do? Worth it, or not?
Cool. I'll go ahead and install Vista 64 on this hard drive (just have the one at the moment). I'll buy another 6400AAKS and install XP on that later (just in case I need it...)
What about my RAM voltage settings, I remember reading somewhere that I need to change them or somesuch?
cheers
Dependent on who makes the BIOS, Two-tone could mean incorrect voltage. I'm not familiar with the IX38 but as its Abit and I am doing this from memory, last time I got two-tone it was to do with voltage.
you can change the RAM voltage in the BIOS it'll be called VDIMM or something like that
To get the to DDR2 voltage, go into the BIOS, then into "uGuru Utility". When the new page opens, move down to "Voltages Control" and press enter. Then down to "DDR2 Voltage" and change from "Auto" to whatever voltage you require.
To change the timings of the RAM, from the main BIOS screen go into "Advanced BIOS Features". Change the "DRAM Timing Schedule" from "Auto" to "Manual" and change the first 4 options to what you need. Such as some RAM might be able at stock to do 4-4-4-15, this mean you need to change the first 4 options to the follow:
CAS Latency Time (tCL): 4
RAS# to CAS# Delay (tRDC): 4
RAS# Precharge (tRP): 4
Precharge Delay (tRAS): 15
Leave all the other options on that screen at "Auto".
It won't let me change the DDR2 voltage from Auto...
The RAM I've installed is this: http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductId=767633
Any idea what voltage it requires?
thanks
You should be at 5-5-5-18 which is probably going to be 1.8v
Go to the timings (Advanced BIOS Features) and check what it's currently set to. Might be already be 5-5-5-18, if so you don't need to change anything.
Spot on 5-5-5-18 @ 1.8v

Shouldn't need to adjust anything in the BIOS regarding RAM.
Trying to install Vista 64 now... bloody slow... it's been sitting on 'please wait' for a few minutes now...
Unplugged the buzzer thing, 'twas driving me batty Hope installing the OS gets rid of it!
cheers
minutes seem alot longer when your waiting for your PC
