Q6600 - how hot is too hot?
Well I've finished building my PC, that was a heck of a lot easier than I thought it'd be!
Currently running Prime95 to test out my CPU...
It's sitting on 61C on Cores 1 & 2 and around 55C on Cores 3 & 4, is this OK? Using Everest Corporate edition for temperature monitoring...
Also, the fan on my Xigmatek HDT-S1283 seems to be cactus, it's not kicking in at all. It does spin up at startup, but then nothing (especially now when it surely should be?)
Any ideas on what the problem might be?
Thanks :)
Re: Q6600 - how hot is too hot?
fill in your system specs so we know what were up against m8
Re: Q6600 - how hot is too hot?
If it's a G0 the the temperatures are pretty decent, if it's a B3 Quad then they are excellent! I wouldn't worry about the temperature difference between cores also, it's very common.

All filled in :)
Any ideas on why this Xigmatek fan isn't spinning up? It should be even cooler if I can get it to work!
Re: Q6600 - how hot is too hot?
Why don't you fill in My System, then we can see what your motherboard is without trying to find the relevant thread on your build? :) Blimey that was quick!
When you say the fans spins, is it a quick spin and then off, or does it spin for several seconds and then stop? The first would sound a like a hardware issue, the second that maybe some sort of fan control is kicking in.
A thought - what power cable is the fan connected to - a molex or 3 pin fan header.
How long are you running Prime95 for? What does the motherboard's own utility say the CPU temp is? On the face of it those are good temps for passive cooling.
Re: Q6600 - how hot is too hot?
Been running the Prime95 'Torture test' for around half an hour now... The cooler isn't exactly passively cooling, there are two case fans around it that are surely assisting (place the case is wide open at the minute :) )
The fan spins up for about 5 seconds or so (quite loud actually) and then as soon as the Abit motherboard screen appears (where you get the option to hit DEL to enter the BIOS), it stops and an infernal 'high/low' buzzer noise begins...
How can I check the temp the motherboards utility is reporting within windows?
Re: Q6600 - how hot is too hot?
Re: Q6600 - how hot is too hot?
the fan is plugged directly into the CPUFAN1 plug on the motherboard, is this right? It's a 4-pin plug...
Re: Q6600 - how hot is too hot?
have u checked the bios for the pwm settings ?
Re: Q6600 - how hot is too hot?
temps are still sitting between 55C-61C across the cores. CPU temp is 43C.
seems OK? would be nice to get this blingin fan going as well!
Re: Q6600 - how hot is too hot?
see if it works on a different fan header......
and check BIOS to make sure the cpu fan isn't set to 0% or something stupid, because it sounds like the system is powering up, then as soon as the BIOS kicks in and takes over, the settings in the BIOS cause the fan to stop.
you could also try clearing CMOS and see if that does anything
Re: Q6600 - how hot is too hot?
does it matter that it's a 4-pin plug? all the other fan headers are 3-pin...
Re: Q6600 - how hot is too hot?
Or if you have a converter, attach it a standard molex. If that fixes it (which I reckon it will) you know it's something to do with the mobo and maybe the Abit forum can help.
Re: Q6600 - how hot is too hot?
nope, most 4pin fans are keyed so that they can fit a 3 pin header, but i would say it would be a BIOS setting... but i can't help easily because i don't have an ABit board :(

I reckon your core scores are being shown too high anyway. The die temp should only be ~5C lower than the cores after Prime has been running for 30 minutes. Everest uses the same value for TJMax that Coretemp does, and that's 10C out on most G0 Q6600s.
Re: Q6600 - how hot is too hot?
Have stopped Prime95 and temps have dropped down to 31C-37C across the cores, CPU at 21C... seems pretty good (especially without the main cooler fan working!)
I'll have a play around in the BIOS, see what I can see (not that I know what I'm looking at really!)
Need to figure out how to get uGuru working in Windows as well...
thanks for your help chaps :)
