    Re: shutting down problem

The second one involves an AV program, which is not one I'm familiar with, but I found reports that said it is a known cause of crashes in XP. I'd suggest using a different AV program, e.g. the free AVG (make sure you just use the base AV and turn off other options) or Avast.

I also note that you're on XP SP2, which suggests that your XP hasn't been patched up to date. Some people have had problems with SP3 (I haven't, but then I try to keep what loads on my PC lean and mean), but as a new install you have little to lose by giving it a try IMO.

    Re: shutting down problem

Yeah I would definitely uninstall that anti-virus program, use something like Avast instead. Or just install any anti-virus for about a week and see if you have any further problems, if you don't then the chances are it was the program.

    Re: shutting down problem

I would agree with the previous observations - problem is most likely hardware (CPU, RAM or overheating issue) or a driver corrupting pool memory.

I would do the following after ensuring you have a good backup:
    1. Run "verifier.exe" from Start / Run
    2. Select "Create custom settings", click Next
    3. Select "Select individual settings from a full list", click Next
    4. Tick "Special pool", click Next
    5. Select "Select driver names from a list", click Next
    6. Click the list heading "Provider" to sort by company
    7. Tick each driver in the list that is not Microsoft
    8. Click Finish & reboot

(Should Windows fail to boot, select "last known good" to boot without Driver Verifier enabled, run verifier.exe again and select "Delete existing settings" to disable verification options on all drivers.)

When the system comes back up:
    1. Right-click My Computer, click Properties
    2. Select the Advanced tab, click Settings button in "Startup and Recovery"
    3. From the drop-down list under "Write debugging information", select "Kernel memory dump"
    4. Click OK on both windows

When your system next bugchecks it will spend longer on the blue screen while it writes the used virtual memory for kernel mode to the page file before rebooting.

After rebooting, the dump is copied from the page file to MEMORY.DMP in the Windows folder, then the system continues initialization as normal.

If you can zip & upload the DMP file somewhere, I can take a look and see if we can spot which driver it might be.
(There are a few sites where files can be hosted for free if you search around.)

    Re: shutting down problem

I feel confident that it's not the BIOS. Either the BIOS flashes successfully or you get a dead board. Have you uninstalled that AV you were using? If so I'd put money on a corrupt windows - however it could be a hardware induced corruption.

No, Sandra doesn't compare temps. Best thing is just to use a few programs and post the results here.
