    Question 360 hd-dvd drive?

Who's using one on their pc? im planning on getting one from town soon but would like to know if its worth it for the pc, is there free software to play hd-dvds? does VLC work?, is it a smooth process to sort out? is the quality worth it, got a 22" screen but would standard dvds on my pc look grainy and would this sort it? would the resolution be 720 or would be just be normal full screen so 1680x1050 for me?. Now what films would you recommend? i got alot of films but what would you recommend getting on hd-dvd, feel like getting 300 but is it really that much better on hd than sd?

    Thanks for the help guys.

    Re: 360 hd-dvd drive?

    ok alot of questions...
no free software but if u can get hold of a copy of powerdvd 7 then your sorted...
If you have xp u need to install the driver and you set or if u have vista its plug and play ....
I also have a 22" and not sure whether its 720p etc... but its fullscreen with the black bars you get in dvds normally...
And the films i would recommend are all three of the bourne films, the transfer for them was awesome so they look awesome ... and other films u fancy for a fiver a pop... Some films look the same imo but some films like the bourne films look soooo good, just the start where you see the universal logo thingie was sooo sik

Its technically illegal, so can't post links to it here... but you don't need it anyway to play HD-DVDs with power dvd afaik...

    Re: 360 hd-dvd drive?

There's no free software for HD-DVD's. You can remux the main feature them to MKV using eac3to and play them in most players if you have the space, otherwise you need to get hold of PowerDVD. Version 8 loses HD-DVD support but it's easy to add it back in.

HD-DVD is a dead format, Blu-Ray discs will be all you will be able to find in the next year or two. And while technically, you can play HD discs without PowerDVD, it will be a software only solution, so expect your CPU to get hammered (on top of the USB overhead).

i do know hd-dvd is discontinued but this worked out cheaper than buying a standalone upscaler so i thought id save myself about £20 and got with this and hd-dvd is a bonus. Blu-ray is not best at all, features are still with hd-dvd while br just has storage but tripple layer hd-dvd is 45gb, plenty. I dont plan on buying any more dvds in the next few years because this will regain its costs after a few buys as a dvd that costs 10 is around £4 on hd-dvd.

    Nearly downloaded .

Fair enough, I just thought it should be made known, there was another thread about the 360 HD-DVD drive.

You can actually use DXVA without PowerDVD. MPC HC has its own hardware h.264 and VC1 decoder. Link: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=123537

    Re: 360 hd-dvd drive?

Ah, that's a good addition, I haven't been using Windows in awhile and the last time I checked MPC didn't have a new release since 2005 according to sourceforge. Thanks for the heads-up.

    Re: 360 hd-dvd drive?

hmm when i click on play on powerdvd the drive starts loading but the program then closes itself, guessing an incompatability? if so does anyone have a link to pwer dvd 7 i couldnt download the trial from, cant find it anywhere even on their website.

    thanks,

edit: dvds work fine but hd-dvd doesnt, when i dont have a disk in the drive it shows as a dvd drive but when a hd-dvd disk goes in it decides its a cd drive, says the drive could be currupt or is a different version or something, any ideas?

    Re: 360 hd-dvd drive?

yes my monitor is hdcp and so is my card. Just tried anydvd, no such luck. Power dvd still closes itself(number 8) and version 7 just says unreconised format, windvd8 just ignore me when i click play and windvd9 says unreconised. This is totally confusing >.<.
