    5.1 sound splitting

Not sure if this is the right place (Mods move it please if not).

I have a 5.1 Logitech set of speakers and want to share that with 2 PCs.
Anyone know of an easy way to do this without having to swap between the 2 PCs.

I have a KVM which will do front speakers but not the full whack

I think you'll need 3 sets of 3.5cm jack splitters (if they're available - will check).

    Re: 5.1 sound splitting

Should work that way round shouldn't it. 1 set of cables from each pc, meets 3 sets of those plugged into the amp/sub.

You can get moulded splitters though to avoid the cables ones like that.

It wouldn't be too messy with the moulded splitters, that the only way I can think to do it.. unless you split the 5.1 between the two PC's to have two sets of 2.1.. thats sort of what I do.

    Re: 5.1 sound splitting

i have this setup with my stereo speakers and my xbox, just used an earphone splitter from ebay, like in streetstars pic. Another 2 will get the job done for 5.1 channel speakers

    Re: 5.1 sound splitting

Looks like it's possibly the only way then, although I will need it to be the other way round.
Curerntly in the pic above it's 1 male to 2 female, but as the speakers use male connectors i need a 1 female to 2 male connector.

Thanks for your help so far, but if anyone does know a better less messy way please let me know

    Re: 5.1 sound splitting

If both pcs have optical out and the amp/speaker set has optical in, all you need is an optical splitter. A cable from each pc into the splitter, then 1 cable from splitter to amp. I use this set up for my bedroom, where the XBMC modded xbox and my HD-DVD player are hooked up to my old 5.1 system with just the 1 optical input.

You can only listen to one source at a time of course, and if both are turned on, you'd get no sound.

surely you need 2 female to 1 male... ie the leads coming from the PC -> speakers are male-male. hence:

    Code:
PC1 (female) <--- male to male lead ----\
                                             |(female to male adaptor) ----> Speaker Input (female)
PC2 (female) <--- male to male lead ----/
if the 'leads' thing is an issue - tho 10cm of extra lead shouldnt cause any more mess than you've already got.. you can get them in a smaller size:

just make sure theres enough room around the socket on the speaker so you can fit them in...
