Can anyone manage to squeeze a HD3850 into a decent £300 build for gaming? i tried but couldnt really manage.

If you go with an el-cheapo case you could probably squeeze in a HD3850 512mb or 9600GT 512mb too! I assume that you have an XP or Vista disc to hand as this would add another 50 to 60 quid to the build total!!
According to one of the user reviews the motherboard has some overclocking options available so hopefully you can get 2.8 to 3.0 ghz out of the E2160.

Edit: Cat got there before me, this is damn similar to his first build.
Without windows you should be fine. With it I don't think you can. (Edit: Cat has shown that you can, but it would probably be quite on the celeron, even overclocked which I assume they do well).
You will have to get a cheap case as they eat money but don't help you performance wise.

I have the same cpu and memory with a similar MB it clocked to 2.8GHz by simply changing the FSB. That was with stock voltages stable for 8 hours in orthos. I used the stock cooler with the only case fan being the PSU fan. My Graphics card [x850 pro cooler] is still the noisest component.

Two of the reviews say that the Asus motherboard is capable of overclocking:

If you can squeeze in the Gigabyte board then it maybe a better choice though!
The asus is almost certainly fine, I doubt either are going to let you eek the last possible Hz from your chip but thats not the point here, so I would geuss that would be better. The review says it doesnt have dual channel for the memory but I have never figured out whether that matter much.
I mentioned but only briefly that the retail cooler on the 2160 is capable of cooling it so if you do try and save somemoeny to get a slightly better card then you could probable scrap the aftermarket cooler from CAT's first build. I had to rebuild quickly after I broke my old 939 processor and was intending to research and get a new cooler a week or so later but haven't seen the point yet.

Well i have loads of coolers from other intel builds, stock ones but with the copper bottom from higher model C2D's. I figure if i put one of these on an E1200/E2160 it should give me room for an overclock.
As for case, whilst its gotta be cheap it cant look aweful so i was thinking along the lines of

The Antec case is pretty decent IMHO. You should be able to get a 512mb HD3850 if you do not need the aftermarket cooler and the case fan:

Remember that the new 8.3 Hotfix improves things in COD4. It remedies the stuttering caused ins some titles like COD4 which was a powerplay issue.
On the COD4 demo it has certainly improved playability with my HD3870.
get that card if you can.. It's faster than the other 3850s, and the extra memory will help you later down the line...
I have the 3870 model, and i can say it's cool - no pun intended. Needless to say i'm very happy to have it, considering with a slight overclock i get 8800GT performance, with more of an OC available to me if i need it...

Ok thought i would bump this seeing as there is such a lot of activity int he market at the moment and the lad who i was going to to be building for decided to hold out...
for 300-350 Is it possible to build a gaming system that is capable of overclocking to around 2.8 - 3Ghz with a 4850 in?
Delivery charges from scan will be free OBV but im happy to use other suppliers if their prices are better.
