Hi Guys,
Just a quick question.....
Im about to install my cpu onto the motherboard but i dont have any thermal paste, is this essential? as none came with the processor, just the grey stuff on the underside of the heatsink.
Cheers.

the 'grey stuff' on ther underside is the thermal paste
lots of people swear by after-market thermal paste as it is alot better than the standard stuff (generally) but the stock stuff is fine for normal usage etc.. but for O/Cing i would reccomend aftermarket
but you DO need some thermal paste
What heatsink is it?
You need some yes.. it's very imporant. If it's the stock cooler or a freezer 7 pro it's pre-applied which that "grey stuff" is
The cooler is from a QX9650, a friend gave it to me and said that it would cool better than the one supplied with my Q9450, they are both pre-applied.
I thought i would check first in case i fried it lol.
Cheers for fast responses guys
Another quick question........
I always envisaged the pins locking into place on the board, but is it just a case of the processor resting on the pins and then the cover over the top?
Cheers.
there should be a lever at the side of the socket, lift the lever, and then place the CPU in, then put the lever down again.
i'm presuming it will have a lever....
Yeah older chips were how you described but now the pins are on the mobo and cpu rests on them. Just make sure it's actually in place, you dont want to put that cover down on it if it's not quite right. You will need to be quite unforgiving on the lever though.
Yeh thats cool, probably just easier than i thought lol, thanks.
ooh yeah, i forgot that 775 has the little boxey thingy ma bob cover
if your still unsure THIS may help
