    oc q6600

im trying to reach 3.6 if possible, but my current target is 3.4 ghz.

atm im at 3.2 atm (8x400) with around 1.4 vcore, which is minimised + stable for 14 hrs of prime95 large ffts (right one?) and temps are at 55c on the cores load (its next to my xbox in a cupboard lol)
my bios settings are as follows:

    CPU ratio- 8.0
    FSB- 400mhz
    PCI freq- 100mhz
    FSB strap to NB- 333mhz
    DRAM freq - DDR 801mhz
    DRAM timing control-4 4 4 12

CPU volt- low 1.4 something V cant remember lol
    CPU PLL Auto
    FSB termination voltage- Auto
    DRAM voltage-auto
    NB voltage- auto
    SB volt - auto
    PCIEvolt- auto

    Load line calibration- disable
    cpu spread spectum- disable
    PCIE spread spectrum-disable

atm, i cant get to 3.4 ghz, even at 1.5v of vcore. Any suggestions, or hav i just got a dud cpu? Surely its just the cpu that needs overvolting cos it reached 400fsb with a lower multi

    Re: oc q6600

You probably need to change some of the voltages on the motherboard rather than just the chip. 3.2GHz stable is a good overclock though. What sort of things are you hoping to do with it?

    Re: oc q6600

what would be reasonable limits for the other voltages, i.e. NB, SB CPU PLL, and FSB Termination. I know that the max cpu vcore is 1.5v but i hav no idea about the others, and i dont want to fry anything.

    Re: oc q6600

Well you won't get any massive improvements, and certainly no real noticeable improvements by going further.

Sounds like you need to adjust some motherboard voltages though, can't just leave them on auto as you go higher. No idea of the limits on that board, best to just raise them very lightly.

also, kind of off topic but does anyone know a good free gpu stressing tool for OCing my hd4850. I dont want to pay to loop 3dmark 06, so is there another program i could use to check for artefacts

    Re: oc q6600

also, am i right in assigning voltages to certain stability issues, i.e, NB is high fsb (motherboard) , cpu vcore and cpu pll are cpu, high frequency. If so, what to SB and FSB termination come under, and should i increase cpu pll to get stable?

    Re: oc q6600

I know you want more OC, but tbph, besides getting a higher 3D Mark score, its going to have no effect on anything you do.
Especially with games, once you get to 3GHZ, any higher has little effect either.

    Says the guy @ 3.66Ghz

Blitzen, are you running your machine in a wind tunnel or something? Those temps seem v low.

I'm still in a quandry, people. I've got my S939 4200 at 2.75ghz. I've just sold my arcade machine, so now have a little money, and can't decide if it's worth quad coring to a Q6600. It's a lot of money.

What would you use the extra core's for? Or ar you looking for the higher single thread performance once overclocked?

at the risk of hijacking the thread, gaming.
I've brought this up before. Lots of people saying stick with high end dual core.

    Re: oc q6600

Ah well can't win them all.. sorry OP

For gaming right now the higher clock duals will be faster. Overclocked to the same speed they are all much of a muchness.

That said, and I've been saying it for a while, the actual noticeable difference above around 2.4GHz is only very slight if apparent at all.

So a Q6600 at say 3.0GHz it's just as good in real terms as an E8400 @ around 3.8GHz. Gfx cards are the limiting factor for most gaming so that should be your major concern.

Looking at you chip and the clock it's running you stand to gain very little from a cpu upgrade unless you want to branch out into major mulit-tasking or games suddenly start using all 4 cores effectively (which they won't for a while yet).

I havent updated the temps yet.
Full load under Prime 95, the temps are:

    C1 - 54 degrees
    C2 - 51 degrees
    C3 - 55 degrees
    C4 - 54 degrees

They are all measured via Everest and uGuru.

I do have good cable cable management and the Antec 900 (although some will disagree) imho has the best case cooling around. I bought it specifically to run a Quad at coole temps.

This Scythe Mine is also a class performer.
