    E8400 or E8500?

As part of my new system the new wolfdale dual core CPU will power it.

Im hoping to overclock, and will be using a Artic freezer 7 as the HSF.

Now, the question is, is it worth paying an extra £15 and getting the e8500? Or shall i stick with the e8400?

    thanks

Whats the rest of your system like? Also will you be hitting 100% load when OC'd?

Thats what it should be, there shouldnt be any last minuite changes. Just the CPU and possibly the ram will change.

    Re: E8400 or E8500?

The E8500 has a higher multiplier so the is slightly less need to push your memory.
I dont think there are any apps that require that much processing power so id say stick with a E8400 and save urself the £15 for a takeaway

Do you really see yourself using a E8400 to its full potential? What your gona use the pc for? Gaming mainly? Are these games CPU hungry like crysis?

    Re: E8400 or E8500?

You really need the PC8500? You can get to 3.6Ghz using PC6400 and that saves you £10. The difference in speed for most users is virtually nothing. You didn't list an OS but you go for 4GB of PC6400 if your OS will use all of it for not much more.

Also you could save a few quid and get a 640GB Western Digital WD6400AAKS. The speed difference is negliable and you save £7 unless you need the extra storage. So you've saved £17 and can go for the E8500 if you like or go for a takeaway.

    Re: E8400 or E8500?

Do yourself a favour and get a better cooler if you plan on overclocking, that is only a small step up from the stock cooler really.

The E8500 should be around the £100 mark any day now if the rumours are to be believed. In fact, specialtech were selling them at £102 the other day, although I'm not sure how many they had.

    Re: E8400 or E8500?

    Lol
Ill be using either vista/xp pro for the mean while, then ill get myself a 64 bit source of a mate (legal btw) - i dont want to pay for an op :/

Thanks for your replies, probably going to go for the e8400, as for the cooler, this will do the job, although there are better, this should sustain.

CHange your spec to be 2x2GB rather than 2x1GB
The extra few pounds is more than worth it. Even in XP 32 Bit where you'll see less than the full 4GB

    Re: E8400 or E8500?

Yeah, there's pretty much no point getting the E8500 when the E8400 clocks to pretty much the same heights.

The 640Gb drives are much faster than the 750Gb drive you have listed, might wanna check them out.

2x2Gb should be a worthy investment, get 1066Mhz if you plan to overclock higher than 3.2Ghz.

It's best to downgrade your PSU, your PC should draw no more than 250W under load. Even with a heavy overclock you'd struggle to take it to more than 350W.

edit: In fact, with a 45nm dual core, you'd probably be drawing below 300W even on a heavy overclock.
