Wireless hard drive, Do they exist?

Im wondering if Wireless hard drives exist, not one you can plug into a access point or anything a small slimline (preferably takes 2.5" drives) enclosure with wireless capabilities built in...

Google turns up a few results about maxator and linksys thinking about one in 2004 and thats about all I can find so far...

    Any help is appreciated.

You mean like a wireless NAS? They would still need power, so it won't be completely wireless, but they do exist... or you can make one yourself using mini ITX components...

    Here is one:
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/D-Link-DSM-G.../dp/B000CFWOEI

and you do realise that transfer speeds will be pants... but it should be ok for streaming anything that doesn't have a really high bitrate...

Yeah, wireless NAS is the only real option. Wireless hard drives, as a self contained device, don't exist.

If you wanted a wireless NAS to be completely wireless, you could probably make it battery powered, or even battery+solar, but that would be very expensive.

Yeah i've seen some media units that are wireless, however like you said they need power. And again transfer rate didn't look good, i have a NAS and it's transfer is aweful. Now wish i'd have gone for a more expensive unit..

Building a samba file server is the way forward... I am not a Linux whizz and I get 60mb/s write speed...

I'm sure I can get more if I optimise it...

Re: Wireless hard drive, Do they exist?

Its more im thinking of trying to make one for my final year project at Uni, As I thought that one might be useful at time's. I already have a mini-itx fileserver, just thought this might be the next step.

Thanks for the replies so far, at least I know that im not missing it now and they don't exist currently.

The WL-HDD2.5 from Asus has been out for a few years - which does the job:

Re: Wireless hard drive, Do they exist?

    A cheat:

    1 buy standard NAS
    2 buy wireless bridge
    3 plug NAS into bridge

At work I use Linksys wireless bridges (WET54G) with great results.
At home I use a Buffalo wireless bridge (WLA2-G54C) to link my main network upstairs to the cable router in the living room. In fact this message is being transmitted across it right now
