    Hot weather blues

And let this be a lesson to you all.

When the weather outside becomes warm and barmy.... Take a look inside your PC.

Check that the fancy graphics card you installed during the winter.... isn it touching the fan on your chipset?

If it is, you end up in the situation where if you pull the gfx card out to permit the fan to spin... POST fails with a gfx card initialisation failure.... and if you push it in all the way, the chipset overheats, which now won't load any CMOS settings... so the PC won't boot.

An so we are left needing a new mobo... which being an S939, means I'll have to buy a new processor.... and of course the DDR 1 memory is about as much use as a chocolate teacup....

Time to trawl the "spec me a new PC" threads!

    Cue "The Funeral March"

    Re: Hot weather blues

You made me worried now... well I think my mobo has a heatsink rather than fan on the chipset so I think I am ok.

    Re: Hot weather blues

I underclocked everything when I was using my desktop, but my new cable came for my notebook cooler so I'm running that now. Stays cold to the touch how ever hot it is in here

My chipset is active cooled anyway so it just gets louder lol

    Re: Hot weather blues

Yeah I hate summer, I had to knock a whole 5 mhz off my overclock to keep temperatures where I like them.

Since I installed the GFX card in winter, the fan on the chipset hasn't been spinning. But as it was winter it wasn't a problem as the ambient temperature was low enough that the ventilation through my Stacker could keep it cool. It's now summer and the ambient temperature has risen to the point that the 3x12" and 1x8" fan haven't been able to shift enough warm air to keep the now passively cooled chipset ... cool.... so part of it has burnt out (looks like it can't pull settings from the CMOS, can't load them... can't ignore them...)

I was hoping to wait and see what happened when Nahelem hit the streets and the resulting impact on everything. Top thing to note, I'm not an overclocker any more. Too old in the teeth. Stability is more key, and as I tend to trickle feed my kit through the older PCs in the house, the working parts from my stacker (CPU, RAM) can filter down to my kids Q-Pack, and then on down to an old Winnie system I've got as a backup.

So, I'm thinking I'm after a new mobo/cpu/4GB ram/HDD for my stacker, but as it will be destined for the Q-Pack, it needs to be micro-ATX and not too hot (the 3800X2 overheats atm, but I've yet to install a new Zalman 9500 on it, and there are some mods I want to do to the case). I'm thinking around the 300 squid mark for all that, and don't mind AMD/Intel... although if Hybrid Crossfire gets working, maybe that'd eek a little more life out of the 3870.

Oh, I use this for gaming; That funky new C and C game that I can't remember the name of (you gorra tank rush every once and a while), BF 2142, Lord of the Rings Online kinda thing

    What you folks think?
