Blue Screen when opening certain apps

Recently, I've been having some bizzare issues with my laptop. When I open particular programs, I am almost immediately confronted with the blue screen of death. For example, when I open Speedfan, it pops up straight away, and my system restarts. Scandisk launches after boot. With another program, Auslogics disk defrag, I'm fine until a few seconds into the actual defragmentation process. Then, again, the blue screen pops up.

I'm not sure if it's related, but there is a video file I have, and at a particular point, about 5 min long, WMP automatically crashes. In order to keep watching, I have to skip these five minutes. Could it be corruption of the hard drive?

I've tried doing system restores in the past, and these have fixed things. The only problem I have is that the problems come back after a while.

Any ideas?

Whats the blue screen say what's the error message?

It's only on for a 1 or 2 seconds. All I can remember seeing is a long key.

If you go into system properties (Right click on my computer for xp), or (Right click on my computer, then click on Advanced system settings, on the left for vista), click on Advanced, the startup and recovery settings, and uncheack Automatically restart, it will stay up long enough.

If its a program running, it could be a .dll conflict. I had these a few times on an old system. The blue screen should give you a hint at whihc one is the problem, then as simple as googling the answer

I get the following error code:

STOP: 0x00000023

Then, a load of stuff about memory dump.

What could it be? Is it possible that the hard drive has been damaged?

EDIT: I'm not sure if it could be related, but, recently (past two weeks) the CPU temperature could reach almost 75C on both cores due to hot weather. However, I don't think the HD temps have ever reached that high.

Windows Xp's site says that this happens when you remove an item of removable storage:

I've had a look at the MS support site, and as you said, it should only appear when removing/inserting removable storage. However, it's not removable storage that's causing the problem. So should I risk installing the hotfix?

Hmmm... It can't do any harm can it. Could it be when you remove a disk/floppy aswell, or not???

Is the laptop hard drive formatted FAT32 of NTFS? If FAT I'd do a reinstall to NTFS.

Methinks you may have to backup important docs, format and reinstall windows.

Could be another way thought.

Does anyone know who I should contact for support? Is my only choice ASUS (manufacturer of my laptop)?

you could always try calling/emailing/contacting microsoft, and asking them...though i would only do this as a last resort, i could not see them being very efficent.

Are all your drivers up to date?????

How about using system restore to a time before the error occured??????

Re-install the percific programs???????

Virus/spyware cheack???????
