Problems with my 1.4GHz Thunderbird

Used it in my new board at the correct speeds 10.5x133MHz and was running ok, so I decided to have a play about and see what it could do. Increased the FSB slowly, think I got upto about 145MHz fine. Then upped it once more (147MHz iirc) and it maxed out and wouldn't boot.

So, after a CMOS clear and setting up all my BIOS settings again it now won't even POST at 10.5x133MHz... Have to set it to 10.5x100MHz! Back to a 1GHz processor!

I've left everything else at stock speeds (except GPU) and RAM was on the auto option and running at 200MHz all the time. Can't remember timings but they stayed the same. The only thing I changed was the FSB.

The CPU FSB jumper was set 100MHz but allowed me to change it in the BIOS. I've tried running at 133MHz on both the 100MHz jumper setting and the 133, 166 and 200MHz setting to no avail.

Could my little overclocking experiment have cause damage which won't enable me to run at 133MHz but will still allow 100MHz??

Did you reset the Voltage backup to where it needs tobe?

Didn't change the voltage. Not sure if the mobo would've done it automatically though. Can't check till tonight.

What voltage should it run at, at stock speeds?

lol u dont do the fsb on thunderbirds u get a pencil unlock it and change the multi

have you reset all the jumpers back to what they were?

The only jumper that needed changing was the CPU FSB one, which is currently at 100MHz coz it won't boot at 133MHz. Not really worried about overclocking now, and don't wanna mess about with the Heatsink and stuff just to draw a pencil line...

I just want to run it at 133MHz again, like it used to...

a while back overdid my 1.0ghz thunderbird (old pencil trick) and once I'd overcooked it a bit the toys went out. It would still work but at not much other than what it was supposed to and got the occasional crash as well.

agreed...no need to unlock it for 133...just the bus speed....but...

VOltage....I believe about 1.65 ish for that chip at 1000 ...so upto as high as 1.8 for 1333....my old Axia Y did 1.4 at 1.85 with an SK6 on it

Voltage is in BIOS.....the thing is this....when you boot it must make it as far as BIOS before the mobo kicks in and takes over on voltage ajustment....

so that means....if the default voltage is low....it might be more luck than judgement as to whether it will boot at higher speeds...

good news is at hand,.,,you unlock other bridges to set voltage to a higher default...so BIOS has no input...

but better news is just.....get a new XP Barton next week

Looking at one of them XP-M's, but wanna keep this old thing for a HTPC perhaps. Should be ok doing 1GHz though, but it's a shame if I have cooked it.

you dont need to fiddle with voltage atm. itll most likely be the mobo complaining. what ratio between the ram and the cpu have you been using? (you havent said what mobo, but i assume its old, has a via northbridge, and is therefore it wont have pci/agp lock. is the ratio and fsb exactly the same as it originally was?)

As I said before, the RAM has always run at 200MHz and the CPU ran at 133MHz untill I tried upping it. Don't think there is a ratio selector as such, it runs the RAM as a percentage of the CPU FSB.

there is a ratio selector, in the bios.. well there should be... my nf7-s has it,for example ive got it at 6:6 giving me 170fsb x 13 giving me 2210
if you unlock the chip (its not hard - unlocking a palimino is though) you shoudl be able to run no problems at 1.3ghz using 13*100..

voltage for a t-bird should be 1.75 iirc, cos the old durons were 1.6

only if it actually changes the speed....if it wont boot at anything other than default......then nope

Some 1400's were unlocked.....cos there was no point locking them..they were maxed out anyway.

nope.....had a 1.2 stuck at that.....had to use heated screen paint on it
