    Building a new PC

    Hi there,
I'm new here so please be gentle......

I'm looking to build a new computer and after scouting around the internet have come up with the following components to put together........

    1. ASUS TM-210 MICRO ATX CASE
    2. LG GGC-H20L BLUE RAY
    3. INTEL CORE 2 QUAD Q6600 2.4GHz 95W GO STEPPING 775
    4. 750GB SAMSUNG SATA HD
    5. ASUS P5E-VM HDMI
    6. CORSAIR 4GB PC2-6400
    7. ARTIC COOLING FREEZER 7
    8. PC POWER & COOLING SILENCER 500W

The requirements I have for my PC are:

    1. to enable me to eventually plug into my TV and watch blue ray movies off
    2. use for general internet browsing
    3. be future proof for at least a couple of years
    4. to be as cheap as possible

So what I'm asking is does anyone think I should add anything else to my components?
Has anyone bought any of the above components and had any major problems?

    Thanks to everyone who replies!

Ok, well if thats the case, id swap the Q6600 for the E8200 and get 2gb ram instead of 4, what OS are youn planning to use btw? and would you consider buying a cheap graphics card?

    Re: Building a new PC

I got that case for a build last year, and the wires for the power and audio buttons/connectors are the annoying things to try and connect. The micro-atx form factor also makes building a PC very hard and cooling is non-existant: my audigy soundcard actually got hot to the touch! Amazingly my AMD 4400 was kept nice and cool by the stock cooler but I would suggest an ATX case simply out of convenience. Antec 300 looks like a very suitable candidate, as does the Coolermaster RC 330.

    Re: Building a new PC

I would go with AMD personally, something along the lines of this

    forget quads for blu ray.

2 or 4GB is your choice but 2GB is more than enough.

The onboard graphics on this is for more capable than intel's G35, you can even game a little on it.

Case wise you could save money by getting the Antec NSK3480 + 380W Earthwatss PSU combo. It's £55 on ebuyer and it's a peach

You don't need such an expensive cooler for that system either I just specced it like that for other reasons, you also don't need the fan or the fan controller. Basically you could get it £400 or less and just as functional lol

1: i would personally get a different case such as the antec 300/900 etc
2: can really change around, blueray drives... are... well...blueray drives..
3: good futureproofing choice, quads may not be better at gaming now but in the future they will come into their own
4: i would personally get a double platter drive like the WD 640AAKS, as it has a higher platter density and is faster
5: personally i would go for an ASUS P5K/Q
6: good choice for the RAM, corsair tends to be nice and reliable and 4GB has been proven to increase performance in some cases (proven by bit-tech and corsair)
7: i would get a better cooler... something like the Xigmatek red scorpion(s2834, or something like that[i can never remember]) it is cheaper than the thermalright ultra 120 extreme but still has very good cooling capabilites
8: while that may be a very good PSU, having never had a PP&C i can't really comment, but i would go for a corsair HX520w or an enermax modu82+ 525w as they are tried and tested around this very forum

The requirements I have for my PC are:

    1. to enable me to eventually plug into my TV and watch blue ray movies off

you may want an aftermarket Graphics card such as the HD4850 (obv you can cut back if you don't need all of that power and arn't going to be gaming)

also you need to consider an OS, a 64bit OS such as vista home premium 64bit would be fine

also if it's purely for media playback in HD then you may be able to configure a AMD system cheaper... but staffsMike will prolly turn up and suggest that

as a purely media/internet system will hardly even use the full oomph of the Q6600, so you could cut back to something such as a AMD A64 4800 etc

also, as a final note, i havn't put any prices as i was unsure of your whereabouts due to you having a PP&C PSU in the build, i'm guessing that your from the states tho?

    oh: and welcome to HEXUS

    Re: Building a new PC

Actually that looks a very good build, you've obviously done your homework, and I wouldn't change from the Q6600 to the E8200 as you've specified you want it to be future proof. Also, if you fancy giving it a go, the Q6600 will overclock to 3GHz very easily, more if you want to. Don't drop to 2GB either, as 4GB is already a benefit over 2GB even in Vista 32bit.
You might find a low end graphics card useful however, look at the latest generations and the cheapest cards for maximum energy efficiency and feature set

The PSU is very good - PC P&C are well known for the quality and stability of their products.

    Re: Building a new PC

    Hi again,
Thanks for the responses - so far!!

So I guess a MATX case is not the route to go down???

Here's me thinking that people were sloping away from AMD's.

I will be installing vista (luckily I have an xp machine as backup)

Might have to go back to the drawing board but at least I seem to be part way.

I was advised that I wouldn't need a seperate graphics card on this system board

P.S. I am in the UK!

If you just want to watch blu-ray then the AMD 780G board should be ideal. No need for a separate graphics card

yup, staffsMike's spec up should be fine... just needs a few tweaks as he's noted himself and everything is hunky dorey

but the base escentials are in the Spec that mike did, i.e. CPU, RAM, Mobo, so i would take it from then

and i will take it from there when i return

    Re: Building a new PC

    Hi there,
after some thinking I think I still want a quad core processor but I'm seriously considering the cooler master elite 330 case with the 460w power supply off ebuyer.......but as this is a atx case i presume my matx motherboard would be useless? am i just being stooopid? if not then can someone suggest a good system board with hdmi capability?

    Re: Building a new PC

Quad core really doesn't apply to your needs.. at all.

That said, the mATX board will fit the coolermaster case fine.

The G35 is no where near as good at HD playback as the AMD 780G though. You might even find yourself wanting a discrete graphics card.

Really it makes no sense to do what you're doing, but it is your money.. just makes me die a little inside
