Slot 1 Pentium 3 800mhz
i just rcvd P3-800mhz processor. It only had an Aluminum heat sink.. NO CPU FAN.
I was told by a couple of friends that it didnt need a fan, because of the size of the heat sink.. but i wasnt really sure.
Is this true, did some of the slot 1 P3 pentiums come without cpu fans
Thanks in advance !

Purely passive cooling relies on the convection of air to remove heat. Stick a fan on it and heat disappation dramatically improves.
Still, if the thing works - then it doesn't need one, does it?

See above ,it's all true ;-)
You'll probably find that slot P2/3's that only have a passive heatsink on them have come out of PC's that had an 80mm fan pointing at them.
I've never seen a 1ghz slot with a passive heatsink.

It will have come out of a Dell or Compaq that uses ducting from a large quiet fan (either the PSU fan or one on the case) to expell the hot air outside the case.
So there would have been airflow either directed at it, or away from it, so yous a needs a fan. :)
Woops, Aeonf242 has covered it already. :)
