    Penryn Stock Coolers - Quiet?

For my next build I'm thinking about getting an E8400 and I was wondering how the stock cooler performs. This will be sitting in my living room as I'm bringing the 360 upstairs (wierd I know!) so I'll be occasionally playing games on this. I don't think I will be overclocking at all: I want a nice efficient, cool system. Has anyone used a stock cooler on their Penryns? My AMD 4400 stock cooler is very quiet so hopefully the E8400 is the same.

edit: lol sorry, I meant Wolfdale/Yorkfield, dunno where Penryn came from. I think I was looking at another thread

Re: Penryn Stock Coolers - Quiet?

E8400 is a Wolfdale, the Penryn CPUs have not been released yet so we don't really know how the Penryn OEM coolers will differ (if at all).

As for the current OEM coolers, they seem fairly quiet and are BIOS controllable, so you can have the fan spin slower when the CPU doesn't need as much cooling.

Personally, for air cooling I still prefer the large after-market coolers with a nice big, but slow, fan.

Re: Penryn Stock Coolers - Quiet?

Penryn's been out for months. Unfortunately, it's a mobile part, so won't come with an OEM cooler of any description.

The C2D OEM coolers have been a big step up from the P4 ones generally, as have the recent AMD ones, as you've seen. They're certainly adequate for stock cooling, and while audible, aren't loud as such. 'Quite sufficient for most' I think covers it. I doubt the Wolfdale ones are any different.
