    Stretched Image?

Hey guys, I was just wondering if anyone can tell me if my monitor is stretching images? On the internet I can't tell so much but when I go to look at pictures I've taken with my digital camera especially, peoples faces seem stretched. Is this the camera or the monitor etc? The monitor is a 22inch Chimei CMV223D running through VGA (with the DVI to VGA adapter) on my 9600gt. DVI does not work and I get the infamous "no signal" problem, so I am happy to stick with VGA!

These are the settings I am running and all the other default resolutions look terribly stretched even the "native" and highest resolution of 1680x1050.

Here are some examples of my chosen resolution, 1280x960.

and now the so called native resolution of 1680x1050...

I'm convinced there is some stretching going on. All the other resolutions available look far worse...

What is the solution, custom resolution of some sort of am I screwed? Do I need to edit anything? Here's the device manager as well.

Thanks Mesh once again... Or Nvidia.. Or... Chimei... you decide.

    Re: Stretched Image?

Well if the native is 1680 x 1050 then that is what you should use. It will possbily look odd in other resolutions.

If it looks wrong in 1680 x 1050 then you will need to contact support from.. Mesh or the monitor's etailer I guess.

    Re: Stretched Image?

Images won't stretch unless you've told your computer to stretch them, for example setting them as full screen or desktop background when they are less than the resolution you are displaying them at.

Make sure you're viewing the actual size of an image.

    Re: Stretched Image?

And posting screen shots won't show us what the screen is actually displaying, just what windows is sending to it.

For example, you could set you resultion to 800x600 on that monitor and it would stretch it. Taking a screen dump is going to give you a perfect 800x600 image.

Go to this page: Wikipedia - Circle

Click on the first image of the circle and take a picture of it using a digital camera, upload it and link it here for 1280x960 and again for 1680x1050.

    Re: Stretched Image?

If all the available resolutions appear slightly wrong, is it because the monitor is "generic non PnP monitor", or do all widescreen monitors have problems without stretching images? For example some people insist alot of widescreen TVs distort images by scaling them incorrectly.

Also I am not ringing Mesh Technical Support... I know exactly what they will say. Reinstall the drivers, format windows... etc, just like last time when I had the "no signal" problems.

I can take a picture if you like, but with 1280x960 it is stretched sideways like an egg shape which is very noticable when I turn my head sideways.

At the 1680x1050 resolution the circle is stretched vertically.

    Re: Stretched Image?

If the screen is set to the correct aspect ratio the images between non-widescreen and widescreen will look the same whatever their respective resolutions are.

So can you change the aspect ratio?

    Re: Stretched Image?

Uploading pictures now.. just measured the circle all the way around the screen and in full screen mode and all the way around it seems to add up to the same measurements.

So this is the correct scaling? Maybe I just need to get used to a widescreen monitor...

There are the pictures, please look over them all and tell me what you think.

Edit - still uploading them now.

Sorry to double post. I think it's perfect now but maybe I just need to get used to the whole widescreen thing still.

If the circle from any angle adds up to the same CM all the way across, vertically, diagonally and horizontally, it must be correct right?

    Re: Stretched Image?

If the circles diameter horizontally and vertically (or any angle) is the same then the aspect ratios are perfect.

Those pictures look OK, your desktop wallpaper is stretched sideways because the wallpaper image is a 4:3 ratio image. The icons look fine, Google earth icon for example appears to be a perfect circle.

    Re: Stretched Image?

best way I can think to show it is stick a movie on using VLC. Then right click and play around with the aspect ratio. Default should look perfect but if you were to view a 16:9 movie in 16:10 or 4:3 then it's going to make people too tall and thin or short and fat etc..
