Linux laptop/notebook.

Hello to the good folks of the HeXan world,

I was wondering if anybody could suggest a laptop for Linux, based on experience if possible. I dont want anything to elaberate, just something to take on the road with me (not war driving... ), play some tunage, write up my coursework and the like. Got to be Linux friendly! (2.4 and 2.6 kernels)

Doesnt need to have too much horsepower, but decent amounts of ram are a must (read: 256+, 512 prefered), im not bothered wether its Intel, AMD, cyrix or that firm thats developing chips for the chineese market; decent amount of harddrive space (40Gb in the least).

Oh, and all for less that £750 if at all possible, do I ask to much?

for linux u dont need anything more than a 486, i run slackware 3.7 quite happily on my 486 with 8meg ram i do my C programming on it, play midi files, and well..thats about it

but seriously, for what you want, get a pII 300mhz lappy for £400 2nd hand, that will do you easy for linux

no point getting a laptop for games, it won't last long. Get a low spec one for work

i have to disagree - whilst you CAN run linux on a 486, you'd have to run an older distro, will have to make do with a loser window manager like ice or fluxbox, and can foget about kde3.2, etc.

i personally would buy a dell, acer, etc.

oh and if you do decide to run an older distro, may i recommend vecotr linux? its designed for older hardware

why do you need Xwindows at all.. teh CLI is what linux is all about anyhow

sure if you jsut use it for learning or for server duties.

but you telling me that you can work productively without a GUI? even the best sometimes resort to one (well i say the best, there are people who can work without, but they are almost machines....)
