    Re: New Hard Drive

A couple of recent forum threads will help you here:

See 640 GB Western Digital WD6400AAKS Caviar Blue, SATA 300, 7200 rpm, 16MB Cache, 8.9 ms

And will find the drive in question here on scan: (buy it from the today only page to save a further pound or so)

    Re: New Hard Drive

I am also shopping for a new HD, but wondering if it's better to buy x2 smaller HD rather than the 650GB. I have had few HD that have failed.

I've never had a WD fail

That said you could buy two 320GB single platters if you are worried. Still get fantastic performance from them if you can find them At £50 though, the 640GB offers great value for money.

the thing that mainly confuses me is the platters. is one better or worse. at the moment though i am drawn to the 640GB though. £50 is brilliant for it.

    Re: New Hard Drive

320GB platters are the biggest avaliable at the moment. Bigger is better.. (faster).

So either a single platter 320GB, a dual platter (2x320GB) 640GB or a terrabyte drive made of 3x320GB will be the best performers

They also, in western digital and samsung guise, manage to be superbly quiet.

I agree the 650GB are better in terms of value for money and other reasons. I have learned the hard way to always back up my files and still looking at x2 HD for this reason also.

    Re: New Hard Drive

I would say the wd640gb, i got that, and ive heard people saying it was really fast. I was going to get the 750gb samsung (which is good too), but someone recomended it to me here

    Less platters = faster

Neither have I and one of mine has now done nearly 7 years. I'm impressed. Needless to say it's backed up though so failure wouldn't be a problem, more an annoyance.

    Yet!

hqard drives are mechanical devices - it isn't a question of if they fail - only when!

(And to quote from the financial sevices sector - "Past performance is no indication of future performance" - and you can always get a rogue one that fails prematurely - whatever the make!)

That said... WD are one of the widely regarded makes, along with Samsung and Seagate. Samsung (and maybe the others) offer long warranties on their drives - although sas the data is of greater value than the disk, that may be of little consolation if it fails - does perhaps indicate the faith the mfr has in it's products.

In terms of cost/GB, larger drives tend to be better, but if you are considering backup (and on a limited budget) twosmaller drives may be better - you can then connect one as required to back up irreplaceable data.

That really sums up the situation now; good post! You only need to decide whether to go sammy or WD and how many of the 320 platters you need.

    Re: New Hard Drive

Well saying that I've never had a WD fail I didn't mean they are bullet proof by any means but they built fantastically well and having never let me down will get my money until they do I have 4 AAKS a KS and various other models (5+ years old) which are still running today.
